I see lots of posts recently regarding line winders. I thought I'd show you mine. Keep in mind I am financially and and space challenged (live on SSI), so I had to get creative. I bought a used desk at the local thrift shop for 15$ that I use for my "bench". So I went to the hardware store and bought a length of 1/4"x 20 all thread and bent it to shape.I got 2 springs, 2 1/4 collars with set screws (came with the allen key), and some nylon bushings that will fit most spools, and some wing nuts. The section that holds the reel is removable so I don't take up all the real estate on the bench when I'm not using it. I can do small baitcasters and large ones by simple putting a 1/2 inch block under the reel seat so the handles will clear the bench. The only thing I want to add is a "waving rod" so I don't have to handle line with my fingers if winding an open face reel. I'm gonna do that with a piece of wire with a loop at the top, but that's for later. With the springs and collars I can put LOTS of tension on the feeder spool if I need to, because I primarily use braidl. Here are some pics. Hope this helps someone out.

I found the reel seat in the trash at the local peir on a discarded bottom section. I used a piece of an old crutch I found to bolt it to for stability, and If I need to raise it for a larger reel I stick a 1/2 piece of scrap wood under it so the handle will clear the bench. For spinners, I mount the to the seat and just hold in in my hands. Works great. This has been a very efective solution for me and the best part is I have less than $5 in parts at the hardware store to build it.

When level winding a conventional may I suggest you use an old rod ring (preferably a sic tip top) .Plain wire could damage fishing line.
Have you given any thought to a drag system for spooling braid?

TB, I just got an old top section, and I am going to modify it to use. The nylon bushings act much like the Delrin washer on a 4/0, and although I don't have a drag scale yet, I can put enough pressure on the feeder spool to stop it dead.

Good job. You fill the need for sure. Sure beats the old ways youand I used to do it......Way cleaner than mine! The removable idea is handy when you have limited space too.. Thanks for sharing your work and ideas......... many may follow.
