Hello,
I just purchased a used Shimano Tekota 700 Level wind reel. Its in near mind condition
but...the level wind does not function properly. (I knew this before I bought it)
The level wind line guide doesn't move back and forth consistently.
It gets caught up at the far left and right sides of the spool and at times gets hung up as it travels across the spool too.
I can get it to work pretty well by tilting the reel in the direction I want the line guide to go.
I've purchased a new worm gear and line guide pawl which should arrive in a day or two.
Any suggestions on what could be the issue?
Are the parts I ordered the issue or could it be something else?
Thanks for any information anyone can share!
Tight Lines,
John

Hi John,
Other than the level wind and level wind pawl, you may want to inspect the nylon gears of the level wind assembly. They are designed to fail in the even you get your finger caught between the frame and the line guide. they may have gotten their fingers stuck in more than one place damaging those gears.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
Bryan
Yup, I think between the worm gear (unlikely, to be honest) the pawl and the nylon gear you've got basically all the possible failure modes covered.
I'll bet one internet-penny that it's the nylon gear.
I'll put one on the pawl ;) ;D
I seem perhaps 50 Tekota 700s per year in my shop; they are quite popular for people who need a level wind for halibut.
If it gets stuck at one spot, it is almost certainly the worm gear. A new pawl might work for a while, but is not likely a permanent fix if the worm has a bad spot. The two nylon idler gears are probably good; otherwise, your hear and feel a thunking when cranking.
Get both a worm and pawl from Shimano. A new worm is under $10 and the pawl is under $3.
