Title: Shop display of Acrylics and WIP
Post by: STRIPER LOU on July 10, 2016, 09:43:44 PM
Since the show I have been keeping a bunch of my own personal reels on display including work in progress on the Acrylic's. It looks like the shop has become a Friday night gathering place for some of the guys and it really is a great bunch.

Usually conversation starts over knobs and other projects I'm working on and a lot of the guys will bring pizza, wine, beer, etc. etc! Someone even brought homemade taco's! No one gets rowdy, everyone clean up their mess and everyone talks and share's idea's about what next to come!

I wont say I'm getting caught up by any means but I have been able to make a few extra knobs here and there. Not so on the Tbars, they take a lot longer and I really don't have enough of them out there to prove their durability. The one's I've been using on my own reels are working out fine and I really like the way they feel...

Some of the ones in the pics are for customers and hopefully some of the balance will be available soon.
They are complete except for a final polish and making the SS shafts. If the shafts were straight tubes they could be made quickly but they are stepped down from .375 on the end to .281 along the shaft. They've got to be right as this is the part that rotates on the spinner tube.

So far So good on the new supplier. The only problem is on custom colors, if it doesn't come out exactly as you want you still own it and it isn't cheap!
I can understand it though as there isn't a definite science to color mixtures and I guess someone has to pay for the material! >:(  >:(

Most of the knobs are 1 1/2" dia. although I'm making a few 1 3/4 and 2 " for magnum reels. Tbars are 1" dia x 3 1/2 long and 1 1/8 x 3 3/4 and 4".

Time to get back to the lathe and get to work!
All have a great evening,  ..  Lou

Thanks for all the comments! The knob colors really make the reels pop. I will finish the shafts next week and hopefully then I will post some completed knobs for purchase. Working on a blue /gold pearl Tbar to go along with Tom's blue side plates with gold tib frame.

Again, with the Tbars, I don't have enough of them out for testing so until I know how the durability is, they probably wont be available until a later date.

Thanks again and have a great evening!
Regards,  ..  Lou

Thanks Moe, and thanks Aiala.
I really like the colors too. I've been trying to make one in every color when I can get the material. I know you like purple and some of the purple pearls are absolutely AMAZING. All the colors pop but the mixture of some pearls are hard to describe.
Hope to have a few available here next week. These would be suited for jigmaster size reels and down. Material for 4/0 size reels need to be larger and  is more expensive plus a special order and I only have 1 pc so far.

Best regards, ..  Lou

PS here's a Hot Lava for David Hall. It was a custom mix and they're tough to get exactly what you want. Even though it wasn't a perfect match it still makes a handsome knob. What do you think?

Are the round ones available for a 4/0?

Hi RiverAngler, I am just starting to work on 4/0 round. They are a little more pricewise because the material is special order and requires a SS shaft of .437 over the .375 for the Jigmaster. I have not finalized the OD but think it will be in the range of 1 7/8 to 2" x 1" wide. When I build them its important to get everything proportionately correct.

Lucky as I think you like the black/orange pearl and this is the only piece of material I have in 2" thickness. Eventually I will order a few other colors in this size but at the moment I can't justify the cost.

Its going to take a while so please be patient. I'm still working on customers orders at the moment and trying to do R&D in between. Adam F and a few others are interested in this also so its definitely on the list.
Thanks for you comments and interest.
..............Lou

That's going to look good on my red and black jiggy magnum.
I'll post a pic of the finished reel.  It's also waiting for one of Max Doubts red rod clamps.

I really like it on that #24-56 handle. I love how stock chrome contrasts with the stainless parts. It sets off that star beautifully.

Man, a red T-Bar would look sweet on my 'Red Scarlet' 501, haha.  All in due time...when you are ready to sell them, many of us will buy them  :P

David - I can't wait for the colored rod clamps as well!

So many individuals here pushing the boundaries of custom reels.  Flippin' love it. ;D

I love that black and teal color.  I'm sure black and Pearl red would just pop out too. Or red and gold. I may need a few as well.

I love that black and teal color.

I agree...that black and teal is super. I'd like it in the round knobs too.
