Title: Can Someone ID This?
Post by: mo65 on August 02, 2016, 02:31:23 PM
I've been finding these drag washers in almost every old Penn I open, and out of sheer curiosity I'd like to know their name. What are the materials used? One side is smooth, black, and feels rubbery. The other side is sorta brown and resembles suede leather. I have found some to have the black rubbery layer on both sides and I'm assuming this is what they look like before wear. Just curiosity...inquiring minds need to know...:D

I believe those are leather drag washers. Leather as used before brake lining nd carbon fiber. After a while, the leather takes on a rubbery texture due to oil contamination and drag pressure.

Bill is right, Mo --

Here are a few new leather ones from the old days -- before grease and oil has soaked them to a different color.

Best,

Fred

Thanks fellas! I had a hunch it was leather, but was unsure because of that rubbery coat. Now I can enjoy the day without this issue clouding my feeble mind! :P

*Hey Steve...to the general public I have a bunch of reels. By AT site standards...I have a long way to go! 8)
