I just returned from a 7 day LR trip on the Intrepid out of San Diego. This is my fist time as a charter master. We chartered the whole boat and filled it with our family and friends from the Stockton Area. This was my fist time fishing long range with all three of my sons and the rest of the boat was family and friends. If you can dig up enough people, this is really the way to go! It was like we owned the boat and everyone was family.
We had about 60% newbies and between myself, sons and one nephew I needed to have 5 each, 30lb, 40lb & 50lb bait outfits and three star drag, jig sticks for throwing iron. Since one of my sons and I fish longer trips, we had a lot of rods and reels but not enough in this line class range. Because of all the information and knowledge available right here on Alan's wonderful site, instead of buying more reels, I "resurrected" three Shimano Trinidad originals, A Newell 332-5 , a Newell 440-F and a PENN (yellowtail special).
On the three Shimano Trinidads, it took mostly grease and oil with a couple of bearings and they were good to go. For the 332, I upgraded handle and drags thru Bryan Young and put in new spool bearings. On the 440, I did all of the above AND I got the Tiburon topless frame. On the Penn YTS, it already had gears, so I did all of the above and upgraded from the Tiburon narrow with top bar to Tiburon narrow Topless.
I personally fished these three reels exclusively the whole trip! Caught approximately 20 each YT and 20 YFT in the 20-35lb class plus 3rd place jackpot with 71lb BFT (the BFT was on an Avet 3 speed EX30 Boat kite rod). They all fished flawlessly. When the bite was hot, I would go to get my next rod and would find it in the Captain's hands, as he loved to fish with the classics and he was hooking and handing to some of the less gifted newbies. He gave a big nod to the drag upgrades.
On the way home all of the Newell, Shimano and Penn Reels thanked me profusely for taking them fishing! They ALL said it had been very tough for the past 12 years or so, seeing the young two speeds go have all the fun while the old boys just sat in the cupboard. Especially the tank!
Just thought some of you who share your knowledge so generously, should get a BIG SHOUT OUT from someone who truly values this site but really has little to contribute. THANK YOU!
Here is a link of the video one of the guys put together. Good Times were had by all. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9zCeD5thiqnbG9TbHUzYXhDWEk

Gary,
I'm glad it all went well and your oldies but goodies served you well yet again. I'm glad I could help. Who said you need the new stuff anyway? Okay, maybe I did sometime or another. But I still like my old but trusty pals.
Great time and great video. Randy pay attention. Dominick
