Title: Penn 12/0 - replacing with SS gear sleeve
Post by: wsenti on September 10, 2016, 09:16:22 PM
I purchased a SS gear sleeve and now have all the parts for reassembly of my Penn 12/0.

I see (and was told) there is a pin (or pins) securing the sleeve to the spindle.

Given the age of the old sleeve, spindle, and connected parts. What's the best method for tapping out these? Vice with a tapper?

Let me know.

Thanks,
Wade

The pin itself is 1/16". Most use this size pin punch. I'm sure you could find a finish nail to use.

Use the punch. That and a small hammer will tame any sleeve pin.
I also use a small notched piece of 2x4 to sit it in. Game Over.

So you use a 2x4? What does that setup look like for keeping everything in place while punching through.

I got this tip from my Man Harry. It is not necessary, but really makes it easier if you work on a lot of reels.
