Only got four but felt fortunate to get those. Used 15 lb. spinner to get the first one, won't be doing that again anytime soon. 25 lb. test on a Newell 235 and cal star gx8 deckhand style for the other three. Spinner was a kencore 10-40 6'6" with a daiwa 7000 rg old time reel carbon fiber over and under the spool. I think they are penn 6-155 hard core type. They just drop right in to the 4000 and above.
There's a good bloody deck.
Those fish should have given your gear, and you a pretty good work out there.
Nice Warren. Bet that was a chore on the Ol' spinner ;D
BT
You did good!
My friends were on the Tribute yesterday & got skunked.
Only good news is he said kelp patties are coming back.
Where did you get them?
Steve
We went all day for one rat yellowtail and one lonesome yellowfin. Then between 3 and six o'clock we ran into some biters about 30 straight out. We were suppose to be back by 6 but they' re not fishing the next day so we got an extra 3 hours. How often does that happen?

Yeah, that was my Hail Mary desperado attempt to get bit, it worked on one of the larger models, but I got worked over by that fish. Fun though. #2 hooks no Fluor leader for me, straight old school mono for this kid.

Yeah, I'm always leery of open party trips as I had things stolen in the past. So I usually bring my backups so I don't have to worry so much. But looking around nowadays everyone's gear is better than my best. I have to not worry and bring the good stuff to be on top of my game. I had the only Newell on the boat glad I brought it. Poppers were working but I didn't have one as were flat falls and colt snipers.
wow... so envy, that fish is still on my bucket list.
congrats amigo
Cool catch on the old school Kencor...

looks like an up-grade on the Newell 235 frame ... how about the drags? It's old school but they slay school sized fish! They look, feel and sound "Bitchin"(old school term) when the line is being Peeled Off! ...they Rock!
...yes, I like them too!
Upgraded to a tiburon frame, don't really like what they did to the rod clamp bolts though. Why did they change cheaper to manufacture I suppose. The only other mod I did was to put a g440 redline handle. Second generation p with the brass gear sleeve. Yeah, even the captain had to comment on it when he heard it buzzing! We need to learn to make all reels sound like Newells when drag is screaming out!
