Title: Pin punch size
Post by: RiverAngler on September 23, 2016, 07:16:20 PM
Folks, help me out here. I don't have a pin to measure, so what size pin punch do I need to remove gear sleeves on Penn reels?

Thanks,
Ralph

I wish I broke it. It would take a very large Salmon to break a gear sleeve pin on a 4/0. I WANT to catch that fish!  ;D

A 1/16" pin punch is exactly the same size as the pin. I would be afraid of screwing up the inside diameter of the sleeve using this. That being said what I use is a broken drill that is 1 or 2 sizes smaller than the pin. That pin & sleeve should be designed to go together with a light press fit. Make sure that you deburr the area around the top of the sleeve where the pin goes in, I've had a few where there was a slight burr & it's a #### trying to get the main gear over that little burr.

equinn, everybody has been using 1/16" pin punches for years. My punches slide right through the sleeves. I never measured them but they are a couple of thousandth undersized right from the manufacturer. They are made to drive out 1/16" pins. All pin punches are made undersized so they fit through the hole they are made for. Just ask any machinest. Try it & you will see without guessing.                  Rudy
