Title: What do you think of this?
Post by: The Great Maudu on November 05, 2016, 06:27:29 PM
I just picked this up on eBay. It appears to be made with double rod harness lugs and is it first gen?

It is an old one Mike, but I don't think 1st Gen. They only have one set of lugs and the eccentric would be further back.
I'm sure Mike or Ray can tell you exactly what you have.
Ray shows a first gen in this link.

It appears to be a good, solid user reel, Mike --

Put together with a combination of newer and older parts --

Notice the lug slots on the newer outer rings that are actually inner rings, the newer crank, posts, older star and spool, etc.

Nice thing about these Penns, is the way parts can be used from other sources for many decades.

Nice reel.

Best,

Fred

The Great Maudu,

Your reel began life as a 1st gen 12/0 . In 37 they only had the pair of top harness lugs then for the rest of its life they had a forward pair of rod harness lugs . Your outer trim rings are inner rings with cut outs for lugs. Someone has modified the plates and inner rings to have a rear set of rod harness lugs . I can see the 3 piece spool and it should have a hole drilled for a line tie. Later handle.

Daron ,

The photo of the reel indicates that the reel is not sitting on its base but has rolled forward.   Work on the top lugs being the centre line which puts the free spool lever behind the lugs and the crank hole forward of centre.

I saw the position of the crank and eccentric lever and thought it was a 1st gen. It will be interesting once I get it to see how it was put together. Thanks Ray for the info.

Daron, maybe I can bring it over and you can take a look at it.

Nice find!

I would try to find the correct set of outter rings, and the peroid-correct handle and shelf-it.  The logo appears to be the older style?  A shame someone modified that hard to find headplate.  Then again, I am sure this was a justifiable 'hot-rod' of the times.  The spool is correct.  Photos of the inside of the headplate (where it was modified) would be of interest.

Wow!

You stole that one.  It may be worth 5-10Xs what you paid for it, to the right collector :)

Everything else, (except maybe the rod braces?), appears to be period correct.  If that headplate does not show any signs of having been modified to accept the rear lugs, it may be a rare, factory-produced prototype, a few years ahead if its time.

Either way, that ugly handle has got to go.  Maybe someone here has a 12/0 counterballanced handle available?

Parts needed : The handle and retaining nut, The Free Spool lever screw , all 4 rings . The correct handle should be like Daron's but with a coin edged counterweight. The correct rings will cover the extra cut outs. If the gears are brass/bronze then it was a '37 otherwise later.

Ray,
You are definitely the authority on these reels compared to myself.
My self induced buying parameters keeps me from buying these Dinosaurs.
It is a pleasure having guys like yourself on our site keeping us straight. ;)

Daron,

I like to see what you and the others get up to. Things I have never dreamed of or likely will ever do.  Most of all I know has been passed onto me from the Penn Guru  Mike. Sharing makes it great for us all.

Amen to that Ray.
I just have a problem paying attention to the details.
I love to collect these reels, but I plan on fishing them. ;)

I thought that all 12/0's used to come with front and read rod braces.  No?

Steve,

The 14/0 & 16/0 always had the front & rear rod braces . The 12/0's only have the front rod brace. The earliest 12/0's did not even have the front rod brace.

Yea,
The Senators that I know. 9/0 and 12/0. One Brace. 14 and 16/0, two rod braces.
Mike's reel is an oddity. I'm sure I will see it soon enough.

Once I get it I'll take it over to Darons for a close inspection. I'm curious to see how they put the double lugs on it. We'll post pics of anything of interest on this thread.

Made my way over to Mike's this evening to check out the Dinosaur.
I think it is a 37 that someone Frankened the plate to accept the additional lugs.
The thing that really struck me as odd was the pinion. It is Brass too.
Never seen that before. Brass main and pinion gears with rough cuts to accept the lugs.
The plate is still in Tact. Just need to find correct rings for it.
It also had a black steel washer that I thought was Delrin on top of the Belleville.
I put it under it when I put it back together.

Thank you. I had a great time with The Shark Hunter. It's nice finding a kindred spirit right in the neighborhood. According to Ray if the gears are brass this is a 1937 12/0 since that is the only year brass was ever used. This reel has the brass gears. Both side plates each have one factory cut out for the harness lugs. I have period correct parts to put everything back to original except a pair of inner rings with the matching cut outs for for the harness lugs. What is the chance of ever finding those?

I Have been good to Mike.
That is just how I roll.
He has been good to me as well.
I exchanged that spool for his 12/0, only because he received a 14/0 by mistake.
It all comes around my friends.
I slapped some new rings and a few parts on his first gen 12/0.
He actually came with a wrapped present for me.
A Templar 1420 1/2.
Thank You Mike!
This reel is super cool. ;)

Nice reel Daron.  That one should be fun to take apart.  I am still looking fir my first big Pflueger.  I have been waiting for a boxed 9/0 Atlapac.  Wouldn't that be fun yo catch a shark from shore on that bad boy?

I also got a Christmas present sort of yesterday for my 1st gen, 1st year 1937 12/0. If you remember from earlier in this thread the reel, as found, has front and rear rod braces. 12/0's only come with the front set but, the 1937 1st year was unique in that it was made without any braces. Only lugs for a harness. That meant the inner rings were made with only one slot milled to accept a lug. This reel had rings with 3 slots cut to accept the two rod brace lugs and the harness lug. I said I had a hard time imagining I would ever come across a set to make it right. "Never say never", was the Shark Hunter's reply. In addition, several commented that the two outer rings were actually inner rings that someone slapped on. So I went to see the Wizard, the Shark Hunter to get a counter balanced crank to replace the 14/0 crank that was on the reel. I told him I also needed to find an eccentric lever nut and a set of 1st gen, 1st year inner rings to put it into correct configuration. In addition it also needed outer rings to replace the incorrect inner rings someone slapped on it. So Daron graciously volunteers to make all the changes while I wait. He removed the rings and laid the on the table. I picked one up just look at it and low and behold it was a single slot inner ring original to the reel! So, who ever hot rodded it back in the day just put those original inner rings on the outside. Saved them a few bucks and made a nice surprise for me. Magic always seems to happen when I enter the den of the Shark Hunter.

I should be outside doing leaf duty, but I can't put this reel down.
The screws were very easy to take out.
Someone has serviced this reel and a light coat of grease is on all the internal parts. Whew!
Only the screws need some grease. Polished it up a little and put it back together.
My boy was complaining of the Nev-r-Dull stink.
I am leaving it as is.
Best I can tell, this reel is from the 30's.
Not too shabby for a 80 plus year old reel.
It is Therapeutic just holding it and cranking. It purrs like a kitten.
I owe you one Mike. ;)

I'm the same way. They are smooth, powerful reels and I love the sound when cranked. Did you look at the drag and see how it works?

No,
I didn't disassemble the guts.
They looked very good and greased. A Templar Guru has had this baby apart.
I was a little intimidated by them after seeing this.

I have had such a perfect weekend. I don't want to ruin it by leaving an 80 year old reel in pieces on the table. ;)

If you think that is intimidating wait until you see the Meisselbach Surf Reel I have. It has so many features that when it came on the market in 1914 they sold for twice what a Vom Hofe sold for. I think we should tune these Templars up, strap them on a bamboo game rod and see what it's like to catch a shark. Target something in the 4' - 6' range. Would make a great fishing story.

Maudu and Daron,

You won the lottery with those rare rings ! LUCKY !

Seeing as you brought up the Pflueger Templar you might like to read this bit of history.

That's a good looking reel for sure.

Nice article too except for the bit about the leather thumb stall being used to level the line and that the /0 or aught designation indicating it is for saltwater use.  The 1/0 just means it is larger than size #1.

Are there any clues to dating a Templar?  I bought a 4/0 size but haven't been into it yet and know nothing about them.

Thank you for the heads-up about Templars being tricky to assemble Daron.  I'll try to do it with a clear head and follow the tutorial.

I remember this post, but didn't recognize the history.  Alot of these older reels tend to get passed around between various members over the years.  It's good to remember that we are just temporary stewards of the history.
