Title: Re: A pair of 49's
Post by: Gunrunner on January 29, 2017, 09:18:25 PM
Hello gentleman I have a few questions I myself
Just acquired two penn 49 with the same tale
Plates only they have two different spools one
Looks like a 3 piece spool the other has a non
Tapering drum shaped center spindle with
Horizontal diamonds cut into it any idea wich
Spoil goes to which tail plate I'm trying to
Match up the parts to the right reel any help would be greatly
Appreciated

Guns, the spool in the second photo are the more common spools we see.  My older Deep Sea and newer Master Mariner (the manufacturing dates of both are close to each other) have the same style spool as your second photo.  I have heard about the spool in your first photo, but cannot place a date....is the collar on the first one piece? As if the collar was built into the spool and not soldered after the fact?  Bill

I believe the first spool with the "ventilating arbor" is the older model. I believe it was made to allow for line drying of the old linen lines. Probably a 1940's spool. They were very prone to corrosion. The one on your reel is a nice survivor.

Interesting so when I put these two reels back together
Since they came in a box in parts which tail
Plate would I put with which spool I was thinking
That the vented spool would go with the picture
Tail plate and the plain tail plate with the 3
Piece spool at least from what I have been able
To find out any please correct me if I'm wrong
Thanx

Scott

If the picture tail plate reads "deep sea" then that would be the older of the two and then the ventilated spool would be correct, but then it could have either spool also.....clear as mud  :D.  Bill

I have not documented these spools yet. No matter how many pages I write about Penn, I always seem to be missing some piece of info. I would put the large arbor, ventilated spool on the Deep Sea tail plates. The Super Mariner plates are later model plates and should use the small arbor, three piece spool.

I'm wondering if the large arbor is to accommodate wire trolling line.  The narrow, deep spools were sort of designed for stiff and springy wire line.  Wire wound on a small arbor will come off looking like a slinky and is very prone to kinking.  A kink is a weak spot.

The Silver Anniversary reels (1957 / 1958) are the same as any other Penn reels. What Penn did for the Silver Anniversary celebration was put stickers on the box tops of their hottest selling reels.

I would not think this large arbor spool with the diamond cut outs is specifically for wire line. When I used to use wire line, I would first put Dacron line on the spool to fill it up about 30%, then spice the Dacron to the wire and fill the rest of the spool with wire. I never filled the entire spool with wire. Don't know if that is how everyone does it; but, that is how I used to do it.

The Dacron makes good sense helps keep
From terring up your spool I would think

Gentlemen I have completed the rebuild of one
Of the penn 49 I think this is the oldest of the two
Please feel free to let me know what you think
Everything has been tore down cleaned and sanded
With 2500 grit sand paper so it's nice and smooth
And all the oxides removed I even sanded the dog spring
Clean only one problem and I think it's because
I didn't replace the drag washers and that is that
When you crank the handle it feels like there is a
Brake dragging and the star drag loosens it's self
Only stopping when it hits the handle or I put the drags
In wrong please advise here are some photos
Feel free to comment

Thanx Scott

That looks really good Scott. My guess would be you have the metal washers in the wrong order. It happened to me fighting a shark on a 12/0 Senator. The line went slack and I thought the fish had broke off. When I couldn't take in line I noticed the star had loosened. I retighted it down and realized the shark was still attached. It happened two more times before I beached him. It's easy to find a schematic on here which shows the correct sequence for the washers. Good luck.
