Title: A Decent Size Bone
Post by: wailua boy on February 27, 2017, 07:27:03 AM
This fish bit an opelu rigged for an ulua. He put up a good fight and was released. In Hawaii we have 2 species of bonefish(short jaw and long jaw), one of which is an endemic found no where else.

It's a round jaw.  Sharp jaw are in deeper water and have less to worry about  :)  You're a good guy for releasing it Wailua.

Thanks. I do a fair amount of catch and release fishing. I stopped keeping the GT's and omilus, a good 10+ years back. I actually just ordered an o'io(bonefish) tagging kit from the state, I thought they had lost funding for that project but I guess not.

I didn't know they had kits again.  Thank you very much for mentioning that.

Nice bonefish!
In conjunction with your future tagging efforts you may want to consider what The Bonefish Tarpon Trust(BTT) is promoting.  BTT has a "fin clip" program to study DNA samples. There is an article that you can access on their website on their February 2017 News letter that explains it in a short video.
