I purchased one of these just because. I bought a left hand model so it can be used for jigging just like a spinning reel since it mounts under the rod. These reels have been around but now I think they got them as good as they can get. This reel is 4.5:1 gear ratio, drag 45lbs, max 80, with stipulations on the location of the line guide. The whole interior of the line guide is ceramic.
It even has a bottom lock on it that locks the spool from letting any line out. This is used for breaking off the bottom or breaking the leader. You can reel in but the spool is locked and line will not come out. Leaving the rest of the reel unharmed and not under any pressure.
Its a beautiful piece of machinery for sure.

I just have a few questions? Are you able to cast this reel? I mean , how do you get your thumb on the spool, seems like an upside down baitcaster. Looks cool , but I wouldn't know how to use it. What is the advantage/ designed purpose for this type of reel?

That is an intriguing reel Keith. Seems like a cross between a acid wrapped rod and spinning reel, and presto an under slung conventional reel. Bet that would be great for jigging and deep dropping baits. Let us know how this reel performs....But the 45lb drag maybe a little exaggerated, but then what do I know.....like the spool lock for break offs....Bill
Its not meant for casting. Only dropping down and jigging. Its a boat reel. We dont cast where i live, in California they can cast anything!
The way the drag lever is made is perfect for your thumb to push/pull the lever while you other fingers manage the spool as the line plays out. Your right hand manages the rod.

Wow, they look quite impressive, and much simpler to use for straight jigging! Don't know why my mind went straight to, " how in the heck do you cast them"".... Simple..You don't! That is not what they were designed for. Hope you read it apart and report what you see. Very interesting concept!

I think you are going to love that reel. I have had my PE5n for 7 years now and while I get a lot of fun with my vintage reels these days, it is my JM that I prefer most to take reef fishing. They are very capable reels for their size.

Accurate do one, it was conceptually created by a Kiwi, it's called the Mutant GT:

It's essentially just a plain old Accurate with a big foot and the frame flipped upside down.
No level wind or anything, they just rely on the narrowness of the spool, and in theory you can cast them too.
I can't jig for the life of me with spinning reels anyway so it's neither here nor there :)
Yes I called accurate first,,,, but when I got my dad his birthday present it was a pe5n and rod and it was more than I expected smooth top quality :o
The mechanics of the JM reel are just like the Accurate reels. JM changed many things to make this reel more user friendly. Especially the drag lever and levelwind system.
