Title: Torched the gear on Penn Torque 7 Spinner
Post by: zward on June 14, 2017, 03:41:19 PM
Been awhile since my last post but curious if others have more experience with these reels. On out last trip one of my buddies commented that his reel was 'skipping' (the Torque spinner). Soon as I looked at it I saw the two top screws on the side plate (handle side) had backed out a mm or so and allowed the main gear to disengage the pinion slightly. I cracked the reel open and can see where the 'skip' is several of the teeth on the main gear have a good amount sheared off. The thing I'm wondering is with these reels is the pinion hard enough that it could survive and would just need a new main gear? I'm not seeing much wear on the pinion, but then again I've always replaced gears in sets. Will likely just pay the extra $60 for a pinion as well, just sucks it's gonna be $150 because two screws backed out.

The reel is about 4-5 years old so no warranty. Definitely going to pay more attention to this on the other spinners now!

Thanks for any advice,
Zane

You'll need to replace both gears...

Yup replace both gears as a set.
From the little I know about these very fine spinning reels your issue is one I have only heard once before. I am sorry this happened. However I am glad you posted this as a reminder to the rest of us. The Torque 2 spinner will be my next reel....Jeff

Yeah only hiccup we've had so far, but a pretty simple way to mess up the internals quick. Otherwise I love the reel and we fish them pretty hard jigging for big black grouper. The only other 'super' spinner we have is a Daiwa Isla Bull, and though I don't have anything negative to say about that reel, for some reason I just prefer fishing with the torque.

Thanks for the input guys,
Zane
