I have some time and I want to try and upgrade the drag on my Dam Quick 2 speed. I have some metal drag washers out of a super I got for parts I can use and I want to make them thinner so I can add more cf washers. How do you do that? What do you use to hold the washers flat? I have some rudamentary power tools I can use but can't figure out how to hold onto the washers. Don't want to buy another parts reel if I goof these up. Thanks Sheridan
It is time consuming but I use a large sharping stone. I have found it is far easier to have new washers cut. I am out of .030" but I do have some .020" SS.
I'm with Lee - get them cut, laser or water cutter. For general lapping I use wet and dry on a glass plate - rub in a random circular motion, use finer and finer grits, until the desired finish is obtained. I did this with a 3 stack spinner, converting it to a 5 stack. Very smooth but a ridiculous amount of drag. Too much for the reel (and me ;D). I went back to a 3 stack with polished washers, much more sensible. An alternative approach is to use thinner cf. A lot of modern spinners seem to have 1mm washers I have swapped them for .5mm cf and managed to squeeze in an extra cf and metal washer - not sure it was worth the effort :-\ Most of the time I just lap the metal washers and fit greased cf. You can have too much drag ;)
Thanks for the replies, the way they're keyed and eared I think it would be hard to find a thin replacement but who knows.
What I was getting at was how do you hold the washer to keep it flat to the stone? Just lay it on the stone and push down? Glue it onto something with hot glue or epoxy? Thanks again
Lee's method will work.
If you have to take a lot off, it will be a pain. A couple of fingers to hold it down and some light pressure. Go in a circular motion and keep rotating its position. If you have a micrometer that will help as you want to keep it flat and uniform in size throughout.
I have ground them on a surface grinder, also a pain. Best way for that method is Thin 3M 2 way tape to hold them down. Cuts have to be extremely light and it takes forever.
Good luck, .. Lou
