Title: Still here - but need to thin out
Post by: biggiesmalls on October 24, 2017, 12:38:59 AM
Hey y'all,

No, I didn't die lol. Still hanging around, haven't had much time to fish though. Picking up more and more shifts at work, and the new girlfriend isn't helping either ;P

I'm still thinking about this thinning out though. I don't remember my original estimate, but I think it was around 9-12 rods depending on how many I picked up along the way.

Now, I think I could get away with three different setups for the boat - a 7' 6-12 lb rod, 2500 spinner, and 20 lb braid for anything under 30 pounds. A 7'6" 15-30 lb rod, 6000 spinner, and 50 lb braid for any bigger fish like tarpon, sharks, grouper, and others. Then a 6'6" 30-50 lb rod, 20-lb conventional reel, and 65 or 80 lb braid for trolling, baiting sharks, jigging, and other stuff.

I could probably manage to get two of those lighter spinners, since I will probably use them for bass fishing and for inshore stuff. I've thought about getting a baitcaster going for bass, but I don't see much of a benefit.
I'll have a light or ultralight setup for panfishing.

Then the beach, I'll have the 9/0 on the 5'something" rod, a 8500 spinfisher on an 11-12' rod, and a 4500 spinfisher on a 9' rod. Not 100% on line plans yet - but thinking the 9/0 will have 600 yards of 130# braid topped with 150# mono. The 8500 spinfisher will have 80-100 yards of 100# braid on top with the rest being 65# braid below. Then probably straight 30# braid on the 4500 (just a bait rod).

Anyways, I'm still alive though. But work, 3 AP's, and a beautiful girl aren't helping my fishing schedule. But I can tell you this - in 2018, the fish had better stock up on some tylenol, because I'll be putting the hurting on them.

Never ditch the equipment, you will ALWAYS regret it. You will say "I wish I didn't sell it" or " I used the have that but...." etc....
Someone else will end up with your treasures if you get rid of them.
If you don't need the money, keep them!

What caranx said Drew.  At least keep your hands on your Penns.  You'll regret it later.

Oh believe me, the Penns are all staying. I'm getting rid of a lot of the older crap laying around, mostly random spinning setups and random lures and terminal stuff. I have so much junk everywhere, I doubt I'll get a ton of money off of this stuff but it'll be a little bit... hopefully enough for a few more reels :)

I've had my eyes on a set of Penn Conflicts. A 1000, a pair of 2500's, and a 6000 for boat and freshwater use. Then the customized 980 Mag and 9/0 for bigger stuff, and a 4500 and 8500 Spinfisher for surf (I like that sealed drag and nice line capacity). I can't imagine I'll need anything else... yet.

ok, someone's gotta be the adult in the room and just say it.  sorry drew, dump the girlfriend.  you need the job, you've gotta stay in school, and no one here is going to tell you to give up fishing.  that leaves just one thing.    :-\

Hey, if you're willing to think this far ahead...  One day you'll own that boat, and soon enough will need a crew, first mate, bait boy, etc.   That's where the girlfriend comes in.  If she is a potential wife then there is the possibility of several "mini-biggies" one day.  If the wife is into fishing, they could be home-schooled at sea ;) and all of your dreams could come to fruition.  Think of Wicked Tuna meets the Brady Bunch. ;D

If you're girlfriend isn't into fishing, or isn't conceivably wife material, then you have an existential crisis waiting for you. ::)

you guys are too ethical & unimaginative...
get "injured" at work;
while collecting w-comp, take the girlfriend fishing;
bring the lap-top along, for schoolwork (in case the fish and/or girlfriend are uncooperative)

This thread just makes me laugh...but in reverse! At least for now both my daughters love to fish, I feel sorry for the "cute, hunky" guy that goes with them on a bass boat, and doesn't seem to like fishing...... Guess I should look into that ejection seat option for the boat😁

I'd probably tell my son, if he were ina similar situation, "I'd recommend prioritizing like this:#1) fishing tackle & fishing; #2) "good" female companionship; #3) career oriented employment; #4) school".
#3 don't take too seriously, just make an effort and DON'T let'em turn you into a BS artist.
#4 not a big fan a school over self teaching and school's supposed to be straight-up academia, but can be more of a business, even public schooling. Only if you really think you'll get something odda it and enjoy it. Or if you really need the cert./degree for the job which is a poor reason, but, such is the world...

Tough crowd lol. Good news is... She's into fishing. She can stay around... For now ;)

So we can combine those two things together.
Anybody have a good word about the Conflicts? Might pick up a 2500 to play with, then another, and another...

Don't take too seriously all of the advice you are receiving, Drew...🙂🙂🙂

Sounds like you have a good balance.

But remember, we learn little from others mistakes, cautions, and successes.

We learn the most from the mistakes and successes we own.

Stay employed, get that degree, enjoy your fishing hobby, and don't get too serious about the women in your life until you feel you are set financially, have steady judgement, and your future is not completely planned out -- but you do have a goal along with a plan to get there.

And also, know that the perceived importance of every passion and goal could change in the blink of an eye.  So grab what you can now, do it daily, be careful, be wise -- work steadily towards your goals -- but enjoy life as you go.

Just another's 2 cents...

Best,

Fred

That is a pretty clever and mostly accurate matrix, Alan --

But like the speaker sez, it is not static -- it moves around to a certain extent.

I would say Joy and you did very well without the matrix!

Best to you and Joy!

Fred

My current girlfriend loves to fish, so thats important, she doesn't go hunting with me though, she cries when i shoot things.

Fish lives don't seem to matter to her. ???

Drew, do you need a bass reel (bait caster, not spinning).  I've got a couple.  They have all been serviced.  Just let me know what line test and capacity you are looking for or approximate size and I'll send you pics...and you can choose which one you want.  Let me know.

About the girl thing...well, you have a lot of older :D men giving you experience advise...but you have a fisherwoman?  You are doing much better than the rest of us to start...

But that is exactly the problem, she is a girlfriend who maybe becomes a wife, then it all stops right there.

When I was 18 my GF who is now my wife, did lots of things with me, slept over on the mountain side where we went fishing together for the Week end, so much fun I thought, heaven I thought, .....she has not been near a fishing spot for 35 years!

Can't all be bad though, we've been married for 44 years now ??? ??? ???

Keep the penns,  years later you,ll still have them.  You can hawk them when you get low and need a bus ticket.   otherwise not much else to say other than your only going thru a temporary part of your life.  You gotta be pretty smart or you wouldn't post here!   Things could be a lot worse! :-\
Most of the largest and best fish ive ever taken was when I had my wife along.   Maybe I had something to prove to myself?

Perhaps. Wouldn't try'n show it to my Wife 'er Daughter.

What would a woman's graph for boyfreinds/husbands look like? Lines for: communication, mutual interests, caring, sensitivity to needs, and ahhh, probably more but I can't think of 'em. Negative stuff'ed be interesting: ego, crudeness, insensitivity, lack of communication, lack of emotional depth...

I think there's some confusion...

The reels aren't going anywhere lol. I'm selling off old junk that I don't use, not any Penns.
Then I'll use the money to buy a few more reels... although the girlfriend may change those plans ;)
