Hey Crew,
As most of you who frequent this sight know that I collect vintage Penn Senators. Well, I stumbled across a 9/0 penn 115 from the sixties that's gonna fit perfectly in the collection... it has, as the title states, red side plates. I haven't ever seen or heard of one, but I got one! There is no question about it, and if I can figure out how to post photos on here I'll get 'em up. If anyone has any info on, or has ever seen or heard of one please chime in. I haven't gone through her yet, but will let yas know when I do. I'm under the impression that this reel was a prototype of some kind or some one screwed up some where down the line. Whatcha think crew?
Dom
Dom, I was tempted but somehow figured out that you had your sights set on it, so I pulled away. I did ask the seller a few questions about it; the left plate appeared to be from the newer model 114H , I also asked him if the right side plate was shaved for the ring to fit, but couldn't really tell from the pix. I have never seen or heard of a red 9/0. Whether a misprint on a 6/0 or not, I think you still have something very valuable. Congratulations bud, enjoy it. I'm also interested in finding out if anyone has ever seen or heard of one.
Dom, does this help?

Sal,
Thanks for posting the photos! When I crack it open later I'll take some more photos. It can't be a newer side plated 114H on the non-nandle side because the bearing is without the O-ring (old style). A couple of other indicators that it's a 115 are the quad lugs for the harness and the handle nut is a -116. Let ya know more later!
PS- glad you didn't bid against me... it was pretty pricey already :o
Thanks
Dom
whoa! incredible reel! :o :o :o :o
Well, I cracked her open to find she is 100% authentic, and doubt she's ever been open... screw heads dead straight and I believe the lube (brownish) used is consistent with Penn lubrication for the time period and was only on movable parts (like Penn would do). I have a bunch of photos, and would like to post 'em on this topic, but can't figure it out. The side plates haven't been filed down and the spool is a standard 9/0 spool. This has got to be an extremely rare reel for no one to have heard or seen it before, especially on this site. I looked at Orca's site, and just a couple of guys knew there were black side plated 114H's, so I couldn't imagine them knowing about this one... but I checked just in case (nothing). I would love to know more about this reel if any one has a clue.... I believe this had to be a prototype :-\
Dom
What is the gear ratio? It may be a Penn sponsored reel given to a fisherman to fish and provide comments. Very nice score.
I didn't count teeth, but was the exact same size as the 9/0 main gear and pinion... I suppose it was the same. I did take photos of the whole innards, and would love to post them if I can... hmmm?
Thanks
Dom
Dom, you might have a higher gear ratio on that reel. When you get it back together, put a mark on the edge of the spool and on the inner ring, also mark the location of the handle. Whyle turning the handle slowly to one revolution, count how many times the spool mark goes around until it meets the ring mark. Let me know if you wanted to make an easy $100 ;D ;D ;D....I'm serious!
Sal,
If/when I do sell it... you're definitely #1 on the list, but I'm gonna hang onto her for now (for doting purposes;)... thanks for the fair offer, though. I will check the gear ratio this weekend after I catch some stripers ;) I'd love to see this be one of the only high speed 115's out there!
Thanks again,
Dom
I don't blame you Dom. Even if I made you an offer you couldn't refuse, I wouldn't be able to take it from you. I think you scored big on that one and I'm happy for you. I just got back from BU orientation for my Daughter and was thinking of stopping by and say hello, but somehow it always taks me over 10 hours to get back. I'm thinking trains or planes in the future. Take care bud.
Hey Sal,
Did ya get the PM I sent the other day? Also, the 9/0 is NOT a high speed... it's got 2.5 to 1 gear ratio.
Thanks
Dom
Yes I did Dom, thank you! Looks like it has the stock gears......who cares! It's still unique and I'm very jealous. Later bud.
I'm sure Dom would be willing to sell it for the right price.
Awesome reel. I salivate every time I look at the pictures. What a catch!
Thanks for the nice words about "Big Red". I will be hanging on to her for a while, but Alan Tani members will always get first crack at any of my collection or gear in general. Hey George, I know what your saying... I had to watch her like a hawk on ebay for 6 days, 8 hours, and 9 minutes ;)
Dom
Hey Dom: Did you figure out how to post pictures? I want to see the reel. Sal's picture is ok but it is not THE reel. I want to see pictures of Big Red. Dominick

Dom, that is VERY NICE! 8) 8) You should be one proud papa. Of the reel, of the reel!!
Rob
Hey Dom: Your Big Red is a honey. Since it's in the neighborhood let's give it a neighborhood nickname. Something like Dommy Red, Reel Red, or Killer Red. I know Rob will come up with something. Dominick
Yo Broadway, that reel looks like crap! Let me do you a favor and take it off your hands ;D ;D ;D.
Dom, that reel looks better than I thought, it is truly a treasure. Enjoy it, bud, Sal ;)
Thanks Crew! Hey Dominick, I'm sticking with Big Red, it makes me think of Ginger from Gilligan's Island ;D
Hope you enjoyed the photos, it took me 2 hours to figure it out... I suck at this stuff! :-\

Amazing, has anyone ever heard of a RED 9/0 115 befor? That reel looks like its never seen the water yet either.I think you should lend it out to everyone on here to have a fish with ;D
Do you intend fishing with it ? wonder if there are any more red 9/0 around .
nice score broadway
I assure you "Big Red" will NOT see the water while I own her. When I got it, it looked like it had seen a little water, but was well taken care of with the exception of a good solid cleaning. She is in 9+ condition and 10 mechanically. Thanks for the offer to lend it out, but I gotta pass... now the black plated 9/0's no problem ;D
Dom
I am reviving this 15 year old thread, because photobucket messed up the original pics. It truly is the only red 9/0 that exists, and yes, its still resides with Broadway Dom. Also want to share with all the members that werent on this forum way back then.
Moderators: any chance this thread can be stickied ??
Done! Thanks for reviving this; there are a LOT of very unique and special reels that the AT Ohana have, but I had never seen this one! - john
Red seems to be Dom's color !! Cool reel I remember this post. Any more red ones ????? John Taylor

Indeed there is John. How bout a 1930's red long beach. Its one of the smaller yardage long beach 61,62, & 63. ...Now back to the red 9/0....
Ted I have never seen the palm tree plates & if I read the head plate correctly Penn LONG BEACH "Pol'd" ?
Quote from: jgp12000 on March 10, 2026, 10:25:50 PMTed I have never seen the palm tree plates & if I read the head plate correctly Penn LONG BEACH "Pol'd" ?
Yes, no model number. Back in mid to late 30's, all long beach models only said "long beach" in the logo. The way to tell its size was yardage stamp on the seat. The 61,62 and 63 were 100yds,150 yds, and 200 yds. The long beach 60 250yds, long beach 65 300yds, the 66 400yds, 67 500 yds. The long beach 68 intro was 1942 when they quit yardage stamping and actually had a model number in the logo. The smaller long beach reels(61,62,&63)did have a unique palm tree scene etched into the tailplate. Those smaller yardage long beach reels were only produced for couple years, and are very hard to find
Ted, thanks for reviving this old post. Dominick

I believe that is "Pat'd". Many Penn reels were marked like that.
Best, Fred
Thanks Fred that makes sense when spelled correctly ;D
Glad this thread was revived! Enjoy learning more about some of the rarer Penns. Thanks Ted.
Movie "his secret past" what size reel is this red one,,, ???
Up close
It's either a 113h or 114h... the 112h never had that head plate style nor does my 9/0.
Best,
Dom
I think it is also lacking the extra lugs, didn't all of the 115 have a set of harness lugs on the front of the reel? I don't have a lot of experience once you get beyond the 114 series... - john
Yep, thats a 114h Benni
Indeed, 114h 6/0. And the freespool lever has been fitted the wrong way round.
Good call Chris. I looked at it and didn't notice. Dominick
I wanna know who that chick in my garage is...

That's funny,,, ;)
First I thought somebody at the prop department just painted the side plates or it came out of somebodys private collection as a joke,,,,, ;D
There is a second red/rose colored reel in the back. Maybe an Ocean City. The curious reel is the silver thing to the left of the 6/0.
You guys sure know how to derail a thread
Ok, back on subject
Undoubtedly the rarest Penn reel known to mankind. Known as "big red". A crown jewel for any penn collector. If someone asked me how much I think its worth, my reply would be a huge shoulder shrug, but in reality, I'd toss out a number like $5,000 to possibly as high as $10,000
It's definitely an amazing reel for sure!

Yes indeed Chris
...and for those that dont know Chris, he has a absolutely amazing collection of rare pre war penn reels, and also penn memorabilia. He is a rock star on the ORCA website, where all the big time reel collectors gather to share their knowledge and show some of the jaw dropping reels from days gone by
