Title: New Guy from New Hamsphire
Post by: Rickski on December 20, 2017, 02:14:13 AM
Hi.  My name is Rick and live in southern New Hampshire.  Been fishing since I was 10 and now, at almost 60, love it more than ever.  Always liked to tinker with precision mechanical assemblies, and started servicing my own reels many years ago.  Mostly, annual clean and lube.   Most of my fishing is saltwater, with the Atlantic 45 minutes away.  In my area, Striped bass show up right when water temp hits 50.  Usually May and on the heels of herring working up the coast.   We have a inshore haddock/cod fishery before the water heats up, and then they head offshore.   Blue fin tuna show up 1st of July.  Usually the big girls show up since they can handle some colder water.  By October/November, some rec size tuna might show up closer to Cape Cod.  I usually fish until end of November, and then spend until first of April hunting.  Start with deer, then snowshoe hare behind beagles, and maybe try some coyote this season.  Anyway, when I'm not fishing, I'm thinking about fishing and keeping my gear in good shape.  This year, I have 3,  80W reels and 3, 50W reels, 2 large spinning reels and mess of other stuff that require the annual cleaning.  I enjoy helping my buddies keep their fishing gear in shape as well.  This year, they get torn down to the lowest level, and this site has helped tremendously.  Ordered an untrasonic cleaner today, and have a old Penn 80W torn down on the bench.  Gets put back together tomorrow.  Did my 80STW last week and my Fin-nor 80W the week before.  In between, I did the Shimano 4500B.  By April 1, I am ready to change gears and get back into fishing.  Lots and lots of really good info here.

Some pics of my ugly mugg.  LOL

I usually put in at Salisbury, but find myself trailering to Marschfield later in the season.  I have a couple buddies with boats in Boston Harbor, which is also a great place to fish.

It's a secret, but I pay my hair dresser big bucks to color my hair that color.   ;D ;D

Welcome New Guy from New Hamsphire!

Not to worry Dominick , I am in the slow receding hair line club myself. My grandfather on my mother's side only had a peach fuzz ring just above his ears. ;D

Hello Rick! Greetings from Western Mass. I try to get up to Seabrook a dozen or so times on a good year and love the pollack fishing in the late fall. If you need any repair work to your rods give a yell as I putter around a bit with them.

Hi Dave,

I've built a few rods.  I have all the tools.   Been contemplating building something like a Chatham Special.  Something on the longer side, large wind on rollers with bushings.  For fishing from swivel gunnel mounted rod holder for BFT, with a 80W.   Any thoughts?

Give me a shout next time you head to Seabrook.  It doesn't take much to get me out fishing.  We can buddy boat.  The fall bite is great.  I need an excuse to get away from the tuna grounds in the fall.   ;D  Even fishing for ground fish, or pollack, I will probably have a balloon, or two out. ;D ;D

Rick, the Calstar RT80-6.5 is a favorite. Bent butt, bigfoot rollers and they are perfect for the BFT. This is the hardest part of the year, waiting to get back out again which will probable be in March for them tasty little redfish. Stay in touch and if you get down Amherst / Northampton Mass way stop in.

Plumb Island is a great place.  I fish with a guy whose family owes a place on the island.  His name is Dan and drives the yellow Critter Control truck.  Lots of times you can find him on the beaches teaching his kids how to fish, even though now, the kids are getting bigger, and don't need much teaching.  Last year was the first year his son caught a Striper off the beach without the help of Dad.  He knew they were growing up.

I just checked out the blank.  Looks sweet.  Any thoughts on Wintrop versus AFTCO?  I run AFTCO bigfoot on 3 rods I have.  I hear good things about the Windtrops.  Was thinking of putting a 130 bent butt on it.
