Title: How to tell what gear you have?
Post by: mrwilson99 on February 04, 2018, 08:34:00 PM
I am planning to acquire some 3.6:1 gears for my Pro Gear 540 and a guy is selling some gear, but unsure what he has.

How can you tell both apart from 3.6:1 to 5.1 gear?

Thanks Lou! I was able to determine seller was selling a 5.1 instead of a 3.6.

Does this apply to spinning reels as well? Spinning reels use helical drive and pinion gears i believe. So how do you count the teeth on the pinion gear?

The simplest way to do it without taking a reel apart is to put a mark on the spool and count the number of times the spool goes around with 1 full turn of the handle. On a spinning reel, just count the number of times the line guide goes around.

I have the 3.6:1 gears in my 540.  I still have the original 5:1 too.

Easy way to tell what gear ratio in a reel. Mark the spool with marker turn the handle and count how many times to the position that you started the crank arm in as you go around to the position that you started in.

It took me more time to type this explanation then it will take to count the revaluations.
