Title: Leaf Spring direction?
Post by: jplee3 on April 19, 2018, 10:06:12 PM
Hey all,

Was just curious what direction the leaf spring (that commonly sits between the star and handle) is supposed to be facing or if it matters. Is the handle supposed to be on top of the "U" ?

Jplee....I normally only work on freshwater bait-casters, so for them, you are correct. The handle should be against the open "U".

From my experience, it's more common to find the cupped washer under the star, not under the handle above the star -- although the Penn 114H and a few other reels have cupped washer below and above the star. When the cupped washer is under the star, it actually acts as part of the drag because it has to depress before the drag washers compress.
