Congrats to big Ken!
Gary, do you catch any small fish on your boat?
You always have nice ones. ;) Hope this is the start of a good year for you.

Nice fish...way to go Ken! It's about time someone gets a better catch than the Captain ;)
Congrats Ken....good fish...Bill
Hey those are some large fish you're catching it even looks big with Ken holding it. Glad to see he's back on the water. I managed to get out last Saturday, got a rookie his first fish and one for me too!
Thanks for the reply s , Ken is a good deck hand. He always says let me lift the cooler ! Weather is improving up here. Breezy afternoon. BBQ time.🙋♂️
Glad you got a nice one Dave and love the blue sky over your Smile 😊. Were you using your down rigger?
I love the smell of these fish in the boat 🚣♀️. Thanks 🙏
I was using my downrigger and caught it on this.
One of my own ties, that makes six fish on the boat this year, all caught on this Same hootchie pattern.
We're fishing other rigs just not catching on anything else so I'm sticking with it.
The hooks are drawn out so you can see it's a double 6/0 barbless snell. The trailer rides rite just inside the tail. Had one chew off the trailer and landed him on the forward hook.
Very nice king Gary. Chrome from head to toe
David I love fishing the hootchies. Your blue setup looks like it has a bucktail fly underneath. How far behind the flasher are you running ??
Thanks for the pictures and smiles. Nice looking fish and great food. mmmmm! ;) Hootchys are the good ol standby for sure.
Is the insert on the blue hootchy a Dave project? The fish like the crystal flash too! Nice.
Below is my other friend Deano with a winter one we got. mmmmmmmmmm. :)

This one hit a trolled whole herring. Sure was welcome. Keep the pictures coming folks.
Yes sir...keep'em coming. ;).
Nice fish Dave!
Is king salmon fishing open around Gustavus? It's closed over here in Juneau...
Mr. Ak. Nope not as this post. Last year yes , Was slow, but we could keep a fish. Ak f& g saying your area may open in June for terminal area bubbles , Ie .... hatchery areas. We got closed here April first 😖
I'm running roughly 5' behind the flasher. It's nasically just a blue squid skirt over one of those fancy flashabou inserts I'd have to look up the manufacturer, then I got a little piece of a straw in the body of the squid that I can squirt full of scent oil. Hasn't seem to matter wether it's got oil in it or not though. It's just weird that all the fish caught on my boat this year have come on this rig. Nothing on bait or spoons yet. I'm no purist bit I will stick with somethig that's working.
I wish we could figgure out what they like Dave. When I put on my green shirt and blue jeans the good wife says no ???
I always use a scent too. Foe Coho,s here we use a small pc of a fileted herring on the forward hook. Its just what they do here.
Keep going and always have a spare hotty lure where you can find it. Heres another from the past. :-*

I catch lots of salmon and never use scent.
Scent is just to mask non natural odors. I use "Secret Suds" to keep my gear super clean and free of any deturrent odors that turn fish away. It works many times better than any scent.
I used to swear by scenting my lures, but haven't used scent for about 10 years and will never go back to using scent
Thanks Max, plus your saving money, many times I think we gotta do stuff to try to up our odds. I,m supersticious. I,m hoping that its not my fault f&g closed t :)he sport fishing here for kings, they are all wild stocks here and have been suffering from poor returns lately with kings threw out alaska. Theres lots of reasons. I just wanna catch one more.

I'm gonna have to look that up, as a smoker I have to do something every Time I touch the lure.

I smoke a bit too, and so do some passengers....plus doritos, cheetos, horseradish, mustard, Lots of bad things can get on your gear......AND if you use scent and don't clean your gear, that lure will stink like all getout after a few days
I'm gonna have to look that up, as a smoker I have to do something every Time I touch the lure.
David, you can look all you want. I own the formula for the Secret Suds and hope to get it marketed soon.....You will catch more salmon with clean gear than with scented gear

Hah! I spent about ten minutes googling it and found nothing! Don't want to push you but I'm planning to go out this weekend again can you get it marketed and in the retailers by Friday?
I'll send you a sample bottle
Max. What about your other little buddy. I can trade you a couple more pictures for a testing size and will double your postage!🤷♂️

mighty nice of you Ted I will be sure to run it through my Mass spectrometer and reverse engineer it! oh wait I forgot I traded that for a gas powered trash compactor!
I will be thrilled to give it a try.
Ted, David, Gary, I fished with a guy in Washington for salmon. He had a brother that was a whaler (long time ago). He had a scent bottle which he claimed contained some fluid from a whale's stomach mixed with pureed herring. Well I am a believer. We were the only one's that caught salmon that day.
Jonah's finest! Don't think it's available anymore?
Themes from the scent bottle. ???

Does the scent bottle help? The jury is still out. Back to the Test Boat. ;)

Gary I'm wondering if you use 40# mono when trolling for these hogs?
I use 30# down here but don't know if I'd be comfortable using it up there.
Just curious.
Hogs? Be nice to the ladies 👎. Some of these nice fish have 🥚 eggs. Thanks for the great question. On my mooching reel is 65-80 braid generally.
Yes I use Berkeley big game 40# leader in a lite green color. And when they get around the motor or chafing the bottom chine a 200# seven strand would save a nasty hottie once in a while.
Always a 6/0 siwash frontee and a 1 or 1/0 treble tied solid. Bead chain or ball bearings r good to prevent leader twisting for a rotary bait of course.
Gel scents seem to work for me. Keep adding every time you can. Good luck 👍 n. Go fishing 🎣.
