Title: cleaning newell parts to shine
Post by: Swami805 on May 01, 2018, 05:16:17 AM
Greetings! I have some clear Newell side plates and want to make the internals super shiny so they look good on the inside. Figured on soaking in laquer thinner to get them super clean. Any tips on getting them to really shine? All the parts are stainless

You can use metal polish on the SS. It takes some work.

Maybe use the metal polish with a Dremel polishing wheel.
That's going to look really cool!  8)

Buffer wheel on a bench grinder, hand held or even a Dremel type of tool with polishing compound. I'd watch coating anything inside as it may react with the clear sideplates making them cloudy or brittle.

Thanks for the tips, I'll make sure there's no residue before I install them. Sounds like a soft dremel will have to do, Don't have a wheel. I have some simichrome, I'm thinking that should work with some elbow grease. Good project when watching one of my wife's favorite shows on TV. HAHA

Get all the old grease and oils off first, or you will have problems with it. SS parts need to be clean before trying to put the polish to it. If there is any salt or sand on the part you will just scratch it to hell and back, as some of the metal polishes have a fine grit to them, and it will be hard to notice them. Take a micro fiber cloth or a an old stocking and run it over the part you will know if there is anything on it once it hangs up. it makes you life easier. I like to wash my stuff in warm soapy dishwater and then do the cloth test to see if I missed anything.

Greetings! I have some clear Newell side plates and ........

now I want to see this reel finished !!

Sheridan, try letting the SS parts on a deep bath of white vinegar, that seems to bring the shine back on the chrome parts so it might work too on SS parts, they clean the parts on a heavy duty (strong) dish washer soap with warm water, now your SS parts will be completely gone from any lube, after that you will see where the SS part needs additional polish work.
with some pass with the finest sanding paper and the polishing scrub of the dremel you will have a nice shine.
Im not expert on this but that have worked wonders for me, no on a part that I want to show-off but its a nice start.

good luck compadre Sheridan

keep in mind for metals it may be best to take some fine Emory cloth to them 1000 grit, 2000 grit and beyond.
