Title: Reel recommendation
Post by: rippin_lips on May 07, 2018, 02:30:15 PM
I was shopping for a rod for my 113H that has a tiburon frame and cortez aluminum side plates, and I picked up an Okuma cedros speed jig heavy rod (6'0" 65-150lb line rating).  It was on sale for a good price and has Alps guides and reel seat, which is why I bought it.  Even with such a heavy rating, it is a light low profile rod and my 113H seems bulky on it.

What would be a good reel to match up with this rod that has similar drag and strength to a 113H, but is a little smaller and more compact?  Recommendations?

I have a blue Avet JX on that rod and it is stellar.

I have two of those rods and they are great. I have a YTS on one and an AT framed Charter special 2000 on the other. Both reels work great on the rod as did my TLD 15 that I have on there sometimes.

Cheers:

Todd

Thanks for the feedback.  Is there a good pro gear or maybe a jigmaster i could convert to all aluminum that would maintain the gears and drag of a 113H but in a slightly more compact package? Im not good keeping up with all the different models and their geaes and relative sizes.

Progear wil be your best bet. Finding a magnum Jiggy plate set is very costly. 541, not sure what the narrower one is but Ted knows. Plus the aftermarket upgrades fit.

I think the narrow version is a Progear 545.

Are you looking to do speed jigging or general use?  The Pro Gear 545 has 4/0 guts and 4:1 gears but would be slow for speed jigging.  A Torium 16 would be good for jigging.

Not speed jigging.  I would call it general use, I would probably set this one up to drop 4-8 oz jigs for grouper or amberjack.  Then I would use my senator on a different rod for dropping bait.

Yea I think a pro gear with the 113 internals in a smaller package would suit me nicely.  Now on to the hunt.

A ProGear 545, 454 or YTS is a narrow 113H in size. Also checkout a Penn, Baja Special or Metal in the 113HN size.

Though the Baja Special is not all metal it has a metal frame.

Check with Randy at vintage offshore tackle. Traded him a nice 545 in black a few weeks ago. He might still have it

For your application the Pro Gear YTS is Perfect for the chore.   1 pc alum frame, narrow, strong, penn 113 proven guts and can be easily upgraded.   Just sayin. ;)

545 same guts as a yts in a smaller lighter package. About the same size as a 501 with all the beef of a 4/0

Randy at Vintage Offshore Tackle had a very nice Pro Gear 541 that I think will work nicely.  The narrow 545 version would have been great too but I liked the 541 he had.  Randy is great, he had multiple options for me and the transaction was smooth and quick.

You could always go 'modern' with an Okuma Andros or Metaloid ;)
