Title: Cheap, super easy rod rack!
Post by: STRIPER LOU on June 28, 2018, 08:11:04 PM
I know many of you have used these before but this one was absolutely perfect for the job.

During the fishing season, the rods are usually in the garage or breezeway, ready to go. Rods laying across the wicker furniture doesn't really work out that great so I thought I'd build something.

Made a quick trip to Goodwill to see if their was anything I could retrofit and save time. Nothing! Home Depot had plenty of stuff but I didn't want to make a huge project out of it. I already have enough of those!
Over to Lowes and I saw this garden tool rack for $16.95. Didn't have my tape measure but a dollar bill is 6 inches so I checked the spacing with it and was pleasantly surprised.

Back home I cut the upright tubes so the rods would enter the lower part of the rack and that was it. The spacing is near perfect for the average saltwater rod n reel. 4/0's, JM, Squidders, and spinners.

The nice part is I can see and grab what I need in and instant and the rods are organized and always ready to go. Holds ten rods by the way. If you do this, I would recommend a dab of dish soap on each tube before assembly. This will allow you to remove the tube and do an additional cut if needed. Its very stable and at the end of the season, I can take it down into the shop or disassemble it and store it for the following season.
By the way if your in the service or a Vet, Lowes offers a small discount. You can register online and it will check your service status.

Part #0595497 by Blue Hawk, 32 3/4" x 14 deep, and whatever hgt you decide. Took about 10 minutes to complete. Hope you find this useful.

Lou: Your ace's with that idea and finding something you could retrofit, I immediately got the brain storm from that picture of building a rack out of plywood that I have spare sheet of and PVC pipe that I have plenty of. Thanks for that great Idea. I know that was not the general reason of you post, but it planted the seed for me.

Joe, I was going to go with the PVC until I saw what it was going to cost plus the time involved,  ...   which I have none, ha!

But, if you have the stuff, It will make a great rack. They make some pretty fancy ones out of PVC and I especially like the angled ones that go into a pickup truck bed.

You know there's always something going on here, right?

Great idea Lou!

Are the holes big enough to fit both halves of a 2 piece rod together?

They sure are. Matter of fact some of the holes are square and oversize. For less than $17.00 and 10 minutes time, ya cant beat it!

..................Lou

PS the round holes are a bit over 2 1/4". I didn't measure the square holes but imagine its the same 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 or a bit more.

I know you don't have free time on you hands so that was a time saver. I have to make time myself to do that project, but I'll get around to it. ;) ;D

Go figure.... a guy looking for rod rack components to build one, then goes to the gardening section and finds one already built

I'll be checking my local Lowe's but am skeptical they carry the same things.....for one, our Lowe's dont sell snow blowers and rarely sell snow shovels  ;)

Thanks for the tip Lou

Yes Joe, time is tough. Always trying to cram too many things into a 24hr. day. Keeping busy is suppose to be good for the mind. I wonder why mine is shot, ha!

Ted, even if your Lowes doesn't  carry it, you have the part# and you can order it online and have it shipped to store. If its shipped to store there's no shipping charges.

The  thing you have to watch is you need enough ceiling clearance for the tall rods. It makes a pretty nice  rack and its fairly compact.

All have a great day,  ..  Lou
