Everyone knows the 970's, 80's and 90's. Matter of fact, I remember seeing a picture posted here with a large armchair filled with them. (NICE)!!! Who was that????
Great reels!
I have a Customer who has bugged me relentlessly for my 990 and he finally won out. Of course he had something I wanted more! That particular reel was always too wide for me but unfortunately part of my collection.
When I was getting it ready for him, I started playing with a bunch of other mags that I have and thought I'd try them out and see how they compare.
Each one went to the backyard on my 10' Harnell with a 2oz bank sinker.
No doubt, all the Penn 900 series cast very well but the 525 Super Mag and the Super Mag 2's were absolute killers. Just outside the city, up in farm country, I have a huge, LONG lot, and I was able to heave to my hearts content. On the 2 latter reels, I had to slow them down a few times to avoid ending up in the woods!
The 170H Diawa's were more on par with the 900 series Penn's. Although Penn's have always been my favorites and make a great reel, these Diawa's are built like tanks. No holes barred on these babies.
You'd have to be an animal to wreck one of these and are without a doubt, made to last.
Anyways, with the boat there's not a heck of a lot of need for casting. Its been years since the Beach Buggy days with many nights an no sleep and this was actually quite a bit of fun!
Had a little play time and thought you might enjoy this.
All have a great evening, .. Lou
2 more pics.
Nice reels by any standard. Yours are in very fine shape... Jeff
You reminded me of the old days surf fishing of Ft Mcrea in Pensacola. It was open to four wheel drives and beach buggies. We would spend all nigh catching bull Redfish and Whiting. It was a blast. Many beers were consumed.
I have never seen any of those reels other then the more recent Pens. I like the robust look of those Daiwas but they are probably too heavy and retrieve too slow for my application.
All my fishing involves casting, from boat or shore so mags are now the way to go for me.
