I have a good collection of monofils, all colors except a black. The rose color variations have become quite expensive and a bit more difficult to find. The black, almost non existent. A few were made and I'm still looking for one. These are sweet little reels for summer flounder.
A couple need going thru and its been on the list for years. Maybe this winter!!!
There's also a simple fluke/sea bass rig I've been tying for the guys. Add a white 5" Berkly Gulp mullet and that's all that's needed. Its a simple rig with a Mylar skirt.
One of the things that's made a big difference is the dropper loop. We use to get a fair amount of tangles and with the new twisted loop, its stiffer and no more fouling.
I've included a link if you want to tie you own. I prefer to have the loop 5 to 6" long, shorter if the tide is slow. For shallower water we're using 30lb fluro and for 75 to a 100+ foot, depths, its 40lb Berkley Big Game. The fish don't seem to mind the extra bulk as Mike at the marina limited out on Thursday and his 2 biggest Fluke were 27 and 30".
It a good thing there are some fluke and sea bass around cause there sure as heck aint nuttin else!

I make all my drop loops and rigs for fluke and I have a board with pegs for the spacing the hooks. It's fast if you are making lots of rigs.

The board works good Joe and I use it if I'm making a bunch of rigs. I put a link to one here a few years ago. The twisted loops seem to work well as they don't foul as much and the guys at the marina seem to like them.

Same board brother. Ruth is the fluke fisherman/woman and a few of out friends that have fished with her have used the rigs I have tied, there have been no tangles or twists.
By the way they have been catching cocktail blues and Spanish mackerel in the inlet. Also Benita close to shore. With Ruth down this season, it's been hard to go on my own. Fluke have been very spotty in shore but off shore it been very hot.

Love your Monofil collection Lou. I've had my eyes peeled for that black 27 for a long time also...I'm beginning to wonder if it really exists. I'm giving both this reel and Sasquatch one more year to surface...HA! :D Every time I think I found a black monofil on eBay it turns out to be another very dark maroon/brown model. In poor lighting these reels are so easy to mistake for black. 8)

It was quite a while back, someone had a black non handle plate for sale. For some reason, I wasn't able to get together with them. If its to be had, we will eventually find one.

Oh brother, it's funny you mention that plate, I was the sucker who bought that one! It turned out to be a common Beachmaster tail plate. I discovered the truth by the clicker's positioning...the clicker is in a different location on Monofil plates than it is on Beachmaster plates. :o Who knows, maybe Penn just used a common Beachmaster tail plate on the black Monofil. It makes sense...they were famous for saving bucks that way. 8)
