I picked up an older 12/0, handle seemed pretty wobbly so tore it down & am now debating wether or not it's worth making it right or just sell to someone w some spare parts laying around?
Biggest issues- the pinion gear is stuck to the spool shaft, haven't tried too hard to separate yet.
The 'post' that the main gear sleeve slides over isn't attached securely to the bridge plate which is why the handle is wobbly.
Non-handle side bearing is also stuck to the shaft, again haven't tried too hard to separate.
PiƱon gears show decent amount of wear.
Would also replace both bearings while in there but not sure how available these are, this reel doesn't have the screw down bearing cover/spool tension thing on the clicker side.
Any good ways (& not too much $$$) to fix these?
1st get it apart, a new bridge and bearings should be too hard on the wallet. If you need a spool and gear set then it starts to add up and might not be worth the effort. Heat, penetrating oil and patience to get it apart then see where you are.
It's apart, had to unscrew the 4 bridge screws to get the spool off.
Anybody got a 12/0 bridge (part 3-116) laying around to sell?

$29 at Mysticparts.com
A long soak in acetone/tranny fluid mix freed up the gear and bearing too.
New bridge and drag stack from Mystic arrived this week got it all back together seems to spin pretty good got to put a load on it next.
This reel was about as crusty as they get Lime Away cleaned it up nicely.

Thanks Alan, we always willing to learn, good value, keep well, cheers Don.
Hi All
I have a question regarding a 12/0 Senator. The headplate ring where the drag wheel tightens on to is loose. Is there a special tool you guys use to to ensure it is solid and has no play ?? It seems originally it was somehow pressed into place ? I might need another sideplate if I was to use it or should I tap and shelve it ?
Regards

I have seen them loose, I actually have a couple for the 16/0 in my part bins.
AC, just push it back in, it won't go anywhere. It's only a shield.
If it bothers you, just add a drop of glue on one side, but I would just push it in, I've done it is a few times
With no issues.
Sal
Yea,
As Sal commented, They aren't pressed in to be that solid. It is normal for them to be loose.
Good job on that reel dbiscayne. Alan's vid will be very helpful for a lot of us too. 8)

Thanks Sal and Daron
What is the main purpose of this shield ? ??? Sorry for my ignorance ...
Cheers

No ignorance at all, probably just testing us🙂.
The purpose for the shield is to keep the washers out of the elements.
Sal
Thank you Sal much appreciated :)
I've never seen one loose, but I have no reels larger than a 12/0 Senator.
I noticed my '60's Jiggy 500 had one a those shields and my 80's 505 HS didn't. Maybe the comming loose thing was a problem, but a "splash" shield seems like a good idea.
I might be calling them the wrong name, but shields make the most sense to me. The plastic bag I have with a couple of these shields says plate rings.
Penn already uses I-Ring and O-Ring, for inner ring and outer ring, so it might be right :-\
No matter what its called, we do know that they are removable, I have 3 large plate with them in and 4 without. The ones that are set in come out with very little effort and all are new.

That would make sense.

Sal I have heard them being referred to as "collars" ... anyway kept the 12/0 original and thanks to yours and Darons excellent step by step posts I was able to bring it back to life after spending over 25 years in someone's shed ... :(
Nothing special but my 1st 12/0 attempt so it went ok

Collar makes sense, but since it is removable it should also have a part #.
I have a large folder, it has listing for over 500 penn parts, but all I see mentioned is drag cover, no pics or numbers.
Maybe Tony from PENN could chime in, it is always good to get the correct part #...unless it just doesn't exist.

Alan the arm on that red handle appears to have a different shape, but it might be the angle of the pic.
Is it like the rest?
Thanks,
Sal

Hi Sal the handle seems made from grandpa's shed a while back using some aluminium. Based on the damage to the knob there was clearly an issue back then that caused this homemade handle to be constructed :-\

Well, taking availabilities into the matter, I think it's a very good job.
Thanks for the closer pic, Alan!
Sal
That's aluminum? Doesn't look the right color for aluminum to me. Could be the lighting.
I solved the problem. Thanks
Joe
Uh, Joe, you're welcome, but, what problem might that have been? :)

Oh sorry I was talking about the insert that the crank side has in the plate. I'm going to make my own to get a interrupted fit.

Cool, please show us how you do this.
I'm going to do it on my Lathe either with tubing or round stock. What I measured was 22.225mm for the hole, I want a tight fit. So I'm working on weather to do a slight ring at the top side or a crimp on the inside. I have a plate to work on so it's in the works.
Joe
Good job!
