Hi Guys, Wasn't sure where to put this, hope this section is Ok.
The reel, A Shultz Ambrose trade reel, pre 40's, it has the waffle clicker.
I peeled off all the wire line, to find the spool isn't in to bad of condition underneath.
Everything came apart quite well, taken plenty of photo's, for my own piece of mind come re assembly.
I'm a bit gun shy, even after reading as much as I could on restoration, what with different metals and materials for the side plates.
What I was going to do, was soak all the metal parts in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and a mild detergent. Then, with a tooth brush and WD40, give all the metals a good going over, then see how they have come out. ??
The side plates, not 100 % sure on how to clean them up safely and indeed, what to polish them up with ?
Any help would be appreciated, for this nervous newbie.
This reel is in great shape. If you have plans to fish it at all, I would give the inside a lite coat of grease. Beyond that there will be some fellas that are much sharper than myself on these old Penn's along shortly... Jeff

I've done a bit more research and got started on the clean up, basically a tooth brush and WD40.
I did the same to the inside of the side covers, but haven't done anything with the outsides yet.
It's come up pretty good, there was a lot of gunge all over it, a bit of pitting here and there, but i suppose for
It's age, so would I be at that age.
I'm about to give the side covers a warn soapy light scrub, followed by a warm rinse and towel them of and leave them till tomorow.
Wd40 wouldn't hurt them at all ???

No WD40 won t hurt a thing. I believe they have a newer version out. I just know the original stuff wasn't the greatest lubricant or for protecting metal. But better than nothing... Jeff

I'm not good with metals, but as I unwound it a bit, it really was pristine and a copper colour yes.
I was expecting the spool to be quite trashed, but it's in pretty good condition.
It's come up a treat with some WD40 and a tooth brush. It's not mint, but for the age I'm quite impressed.
That's good news with the Wd40, I have some Cal's grease at work, so I will pick that up tomorrow and re assemble everything.
I've done plenty of 4/0's and 6/0's over the years ( I still fish with them) and I was surprised with the similarities, it all came back to me.
I have a few more to strip down, so I'm happy with the start.
I'll put a photo up of my first efforts when done.

The similarities between different models & they went for the most part so long with out any major changes is just a few reasons why they are so popular with many people here... Jeff
Very nice all-around collector's reel.
Some guy's shine 'em up real good like a show car, some clean and lube the inside and then leave most a the patina on the outside("as found").
Well, first strip down/clean is complete.
I'm happy with how it came out, it's not done to a showroom state, but then again the reel isn't in that sort of condition anyhow.
I only got stuck into it with a tooth brush and WD40, which got 90% of everything off, and was easy to see the areas that needed extra attention.
Everything greased up inside and working a treat, I'm happy with this sitting on my shelf now, in all it's glory and patina.
Next one to do is my early Silverbeach, it's not in to bad a condition, still has line on it as well. It took me about 2 hours all up to do the Shultz,
So at least good experience.
