Title: #9 pierless vs #109 pier
Post by: twopatch on September 17, 2011, 09:49:03 PM
I am looking for a lead core reel.  I see that the #9 has a 3 to 1 gear ratio.   and the 109  has 3.75 to 1 gear ratio. they both weigh 11 oz. they both hold 300 yards of 15.  Are they the same size? What are the differences between the 2?   And what is the difference between a pier, and a pierless? Thanks in advance...   Jay

The 109 allows you to turn off the anti-reverse and allow the handle to turn backwards. Some people like this for steelhead fishing. They have the same line capacity and same drag. The drag washers are 006 155, the same as a Penn 209 and smaller than a Squidder. Both are very light reels that fish 20# at max.
