One of each size there! Nice work, Joe.
I've never used fluke belly. Sea-robin strips often work well, and the skin is so tough that it stays on forever.

Awesome! I do well on bluefish belly too. The guys down here in NC also tip Spro with white Gulp shrimp.
Nice ones!
excellent fish right there.
one of my favorites fish on the table
Pretty work. Flat fish around the world all seem to be excellent table fare.
Great news, my-brother in law fishes RI, he is a fireman in Providence.
Good eating right there!...nice job Joe!

Nice doormats!!
Those are some very big pancakes,,,,, :D great job,,,,,,, ;D
Great catch! Some very nice fluke there.
Just some general information here. In NJ, and I'm sure in most other mid Atlantic states, an official "doormat" fluke is one over 10lbs. Usually well over 30".
And there are days when fluke belly fished alone ,or tipped behind a jig, will out fish anything period. Especially for big fish.
Check your regs before slicing up any flatties for bait. ;)
When I was in the Southeast the go-to bait was a big feisty mud minnow (Fundulus sp.) worked around the edges of the oyster reefs.

Great bait. I also have used finger Mullet successfully for the Florida Flounder which are aggressive but a lot smaller than Joe's Flukes.
Congrats, nice looking flukes.
yea with regs...have to keep fillet carcuss on boat for inspection ..if get boarded..always do..i only use the the white membrane straps for bait...eat the fillets...19 inch you get 2 nice strips which i make 4 out of for jigging..fork tailing a couple..
Great thing about fluke belly strips is that you can catch 3-4 fish per strip. They are so damn tough that if you miss a pick up, you can just drop down again and continue to entice the same fish over and over. I have finally hooked fluke after 3 or 4 pick ups by dropping back down again and again. Can't do that with bait fish or squid. If you miss him the first time your done.
Not sure if the regs are the same for all states here on the east coast but I know that here in Jersey you don't want to be caught with fluke belly if you don't have the legal donor fish on board.

I thought so, which begs the question... Which comes first, the fluke or the fluke belly? ::) I guess no bait shop is going to sell it.
So fluke have a taste for their own species... interesting.
