Title: ABU Classic drag washer and AR dog
Post by: Killerbug on November 29, 2011, 12:13:57 AM
First, thanks for making such a great product.

In case you upgrade a newer Ambassadeur 5xxx/6xxx with an AR dog, you can't use the Carbontex buttom washer supplied for
the 5xxx/6xxx anymore.  Does anyone know what washer i could use here, and does it play a role at all, to have a Carbonex
washer under the gear??, I have noticed that the manufacturers often use a lower grade washer here.

I ground the OD on the ones I got from Dawn a belt sander when I installed the dogs but it would be nice to have a pre cut washer the proper size.

How do I do that?

drill bit that is the same size as the drag, two hex nuts on either side of the drag washer, then hold it up against a grinding wheel and let it spin!

Hmm sounds a little complicated, they can't be cut otherwise??

I think I might have one that would work.  Email me your name and address and I'll send you one to try.

Thanks Dawn,

No hurry, you can just drop it in the envelope together with my next order ;D. I think the bottom washer is not that important, and the reel has already been picked up.

Even without the bottom washer, this guy will be impressed when he tries his new upgraded drag.

Thanks Dawn, I'm just about ready to make another order for drag parts and will get a few to try when I do.  So far I'm not getting any real interest in installing anti reverse dogs in Abu 65**/56** reels but I'm still "selling" the idea, mine have all been "fixed".

Killerbug,
The OD is easy sand/grind down, I prefer a belt sander but a bench grinder works.  A pencil or a piece of polished shafting makes a good holder and I have metal drag washers I use like Allen mentioned above on each side of the Carbontex washer to keep them straight.  I sand the entire Carbontex drag stack at one time.

I've used both methods.
For multiple drag washers, by all means grind 'em down.
If it's just one, I usually cut 'em down with sharp, good-quality scissors.
It's critical to mark the washer accurately, though, so I align the IDs of the old and new washers, pin them together with vise grips, then mark it around with a white fabric pencil.
Always bear in mind that old chestnut: 'Measure twice, cut once'.  ;)
Hope that helps.
Righto, Justin
