Title: Anyone making their own brass shims?
Post by: basenjib123 on November 12, 2020, 02:53:54 AM
Some of these shims are hard to find for these old timer reels...anyone making shims?  if so, what are you using? .. Thanks, Joe.

If you have several thicknesses of brass shim stock, you can just cut them out by hand using shears.  A press and punch would be better, but nobody is going to be critiquing your shims.

I've made a few brass shims with a Precision punch and die set and it does a good job, but is an expensive tool
($200+ new) and is limited to about .5 mm stock thickness for brass.

There have been several discussions here about using hollow punches (wadcutter or gasket punches) with a press to make washers, shims, or custom carbontex brake washers.  I've used a inexpensive set to make teflon and delrin washers/ shims and it does the job
