Is there a quick way to tell them apart ? I am thinking that the Newell has a corrugated center and the Penn has a pin.
I own and love some Newell classic reels , but am at a loss to understand why a Newell aluminum spool seems to be more desireable.
In this example . I am looking at Jigmaster spools.
Thanks
are you talking about some of the old graphite spools?
The Newell will marked with CN on the end faces. Not all Newell are corrugated/knurled, some are smooth. Not all Penn have a pin.
The arbor (center) of the Newell spool has a smaller diameter then Penn spool, allowing more line to be wrapped on.
Also, The Newell's seem to be better, more carefully, made/machined. I have never seen a Newell spool that had any out of roundness. I have seen Penn's that have very noticeable runout. Less runout = more balanced spin, less damaging vibration, and potentially longer spin (free spool) time.
Thanks Guys.
Alan was looking at Aluminum. I think VW answered my question.

carl newell! i was wondering what "CN" meant!
Note- very early production Newell spools had 2 "flush" pins holding the halves together. These old spools are somewhat akin to plastic Penn spools, and are not compatible with modern lines.
They should be relegated to "collector's status".
