Title: Shredded gear
Post by: Bill B on September 14, 2022, 12:43:35 AM
I started pulling my gear out and testing for the 8 day coming up.  First up was a 112H with 30# mono.  Put it in a holder to pull drag.  Set it for 10#, gave a smooth pull, tried to reel in the slack and it locked up solid.  Crap opened it up and what did I find?  A shredded gear.  The main is brass and the pinion is steel.  Wow, I've never seen a gear shred like that.  Bill

Yer that looks like two teeth were fractured for a while , than came the right time to break off.

I'd guess a piece of foreign matter
that's harder than brass & softer than steel
how does the pinion look?

Pinion was golden, no damage.  I think the main gear just let go.  Found the two missing teeth floating around in the gear box.  I guess this is a good case for SS gears and pinions.  I was able to pull a new gear from a donor Jigmaster and got it back running.  Now to east the rest of the reels.  Kinda spooked me.  Bill

Better to have it happen on the bench than on the rail! - john

Correct on that!  I went and bench tested the rest and no additional failures.

Good catch Bill! Snapped right-off. Yeah, good lesson too; bench test before going on a trip with it.

I made multiple drag pulls to try to get all around the gears.  This makes a great argument to have multiple set ups, and maybe a good excuse to buy more gear  ;D Bill
