Title: Lubricating Spool Shaft Components and Pressure Plate?
Post by: ebnash on March 03, 2012, 09:26:23 PM
I know we coat the non exposed portions of the reel with grease and clean/pack non spool bearings, unshield and open spool bearings but I was wondering about some of the other components in general.

I am particularly curious about the spool shaft and the drag side of the pressure plate.

What are you guys using to coat the spool shaft and items the come in contact with the spool bearings.  I am assuming you don't want grease to migrate to the those bearings since we put thinner lubes on them.

What do you use on the drag side of the pressure plate?  Do you just let the drag grease from the washer coat it, or do you apply it to the plate and wipe off excess?

Thanks...

I always put a very thin coat of bearing oil on the spool shaft, don't know what others do.

I don't worry about spool shafts, most are SS and there is usually enough residual grease on my hands to give them a light coat.

I dunk them in TSI301 and let drip dry while I work on the rest of the spool and drags.

Less is more in this case....
Just a wipe with light coating of oil or greasy hands will protect those areas..

Maybe I am using too much oil.  I will experiment.

Oh, and the pressure plate, I rub them clean, and sometimes with rubbing alcohol.

When I'm cleaning the plate (90% iso or break clean) I'm always thinking, I greased the carbon drag am I wasting my time degreasing the plate....I still degrease them.

Been sending you PM's through this site, but they don't seem to be going thorugh?  Maybe I am too new to be able to send PM's...  Anyways, if you are busy, then no worries.  I have figured out all of my issues through tips on the board and tearing into all of my reels over and over again.

What I really need are spool bearings for my Avets and my Saltist LD now that I know what I am doing.  If you are too busy this week, can you suggest a local bearing supplier I can use?  I remember a place called King Bearings years back, but it doesn't look like they are still around???

Thanks and have fun at the show.  I won'e be able to attend Long Beach, so I am heading down later in the month for the Del Mar show...
