Title: Coit reel model C
Post by: oldmanjoe on October 05, 2023, 02:44:41 PM
The coit reel is a traditional reel with some unique features .     The most notable is the clutch arm .   You can use it manually and push it down to disengage , and pull it up manually  or automatic by simply turning the handle .  The handle arm pushes the clutch handle

The other unique feature is the clicker .  When you  click it on and line goes out it clicks . It automatically re tracks "turns off" when you crank the handle .
These features are on the model E reels also .

Disassembly is simple  , remove the handle and star drag wheel ,remove the screw on the clutch handle .   The clutch arm pulls up with a spline shaft underneath it .
When removing the 3 screws from the gear cover , You will feel the spring tension on the case .
Nothing to worry about flying parts , It`s just a captured spring on the clutch assembly .

Pick up the clutch and pinion .  Some notes here are the bottom cam plate under the clutch assembly has a tab that is in the slot of the side plate .   The other is the pinion has internal splines that mate with the spool.

I will make A note here about the gear sleeve .   It has a ball bearing at the bottom , that the gear covers up .    So when removing the gear from the gear sleeve it may roll out .   Most likely it will stay in place because of grease .  Another note is there is only one ball bearing  ,not two .

Remove the screws from the side plates , to remove the spool .
The tail plate and clicker .  Note the shape of the clicker paw , That is what i believe is how it works in the auto retract function .

Clean all the pasts and reassemble in the reverse order .
