Wallace Carney is shutting down the MRM site.

A sad day for those Mitchell reel aficionados.
Do you think the Ohana community can somehow keep it going?

I think one would need permission from Wallace Carney. He mentioned doing something on Facebook. That eliminates me following the discussions.

Do you want me to delete my post?
No, you said nothing wrong.
I removed it for now.
Well, this one hurts. It was a great source for information. I for one, will be saddened.
It's really a bad deal, a lot of great research and information will end up going by the wayside, but this was inevitable eventually. He's been struggling keeping the site up and running for at least the last three or four years. :( It's been offline at least three or four different times.

This is the response I see from several sites for various reasons. The best advice I can give, is capture the information for yourselves and re-share the information in your own words for future generations.
Darn! Got some good use outta that one.
I liked using the photo dating comparisons because they provided great references but that feature has been missing for quite some time now.

There always seems to be the question of accuracy unless one is the original researcher, and even then later research notes a lot of mistakes.
Does anyone know if Wallace is a member on this site?
I really enjoyed that MRM site some years ago, even though there always seemed to be something that was "being worked on", or was going to show up "later". There were some issues starting a few years back; something about a competing site; info being pirated by someone or other; malware being swapped--I really didn't understand it, other than the site was never the same after that. It was on and off the 'net quite a few times. People were starting to get personal about who was doing what to whom; even me, just a plain old user who liked Mitchell reels, got snide remarks about who knew what about all the troubles going on. Hankered for the old days when it was just some reelheads liking to swap info & talk about reels. Looks like the whole works will end up in the trash can--pity.

Mainly out of curiosity, I did some checking with the ArchiveIt site services who offer to archive a site for future sharing. Here was their response.
'We offer a one-time "Web Snapshot Service" that may be of interest for you. I've attached a product sheet here with more details . This is a fully managed, one-time crawl of your website, with forever storage and access to the archived data using the Internet Archive's self-owned and operated data centers.
Pricing depends on the size, content, and complexity of the site being archived, ranging from $1,000-$2,000 USD for basic requests. Please let me know if you're interested in a more formal price estimate. Please note that we generally require a minimum of 30 days before a site goes offline to conduct crawling and quality assurance.'
This is a lot for a single person to absorb, but for an organization interested in preserving historical content, perhaps not-so-much.
Also, if the content of the MRM site contained all the reel dating images from pre-crash of 2016, it might have been worth the effort. The current (post-crash) site just isn't worth preserving.
I might mention that if Alan ever decided to shut this site down, it might be worth it to the members to take up a collection and preserve it for future generations.

never happening...... ;D
Great Answer! :d
Be still my heart!
Nearly 2 years later after announcing the site would be shutting down and after the passing of its founder, it looks like the site have expired. The domain name still responds to a ping, but I have been unable to reach the site for several days.
For shut down websites, sometimes the "Wayback Machine" will pull up the historical info. I have used this before with some surprising success.

Maybe worth a shot.
Best, Fred
It's terrible. All that good stuff--gone. Anyone heard of any efforts to save any of it? There was a site "Fishing Talks" that, broadly, was similar to our AT site; FT went offline in mid-'24 and all the good stuff on there was gone, EXCEPT, one (or maybe there was more than one) enterprising gent who found a way to save a huge chuck of all the posts, stories, pics, etc.; last I heard, a big USB (thumb) drive would hold all the saved stuff and was obtainable by those "in the know".

I give archive.org money about every quarter, they are such a wonderful resource.
Confirm the pages are still there on the wayback machine..
something goes wrong with this url link here, so just copy and paste the link into another browser tab..

Thanks, Doug!
I used this to save and pull up Roland's DAM Quick historical reel information when he shut down his website.
Then just set a link/icon on my Home Screen iPad, with its own folder.
Best, Fred
I have been trying to visit that site but could not. Shut down or being rebuilt. A shame. It was never the same after that JACKA** hi jacked the site. Wallace tried to reason with him, but the guy thought it was his to have and cut ties. I never did or even desired to visit the guy's site. There are other options out there so that's where I go including here...........

I think Paul mentioned this in one of his messages, but I can't find it. It looks like the Mitchell reel museum is trying to re-establish their site. I see two encouraging signs.
First, the site is back online at https://mitchellreelmuseum.com.
Second, There are signs that someone is trying to resurrect the reel gallery @ https://mitchellreelmuseum.com/index_php/mitchell-reel-museum-image-picture-gallery.
While the gallery links are very old and the photos are not visible, it is an encouraging sign that some is attempting at rebuilding a portion of the site that had been lost.
If you dig around, there are a few photos, like the Conolon Rods gallery @ https://mitchellreelmuseum.com/index_php/category/572-garcia-conolon-rod-advertisements-narmco
An interesting find from the old MRM site is the video section with some preserved video on casting demonstrations, mitchel reel history, hollow fiberglass fishing rods and some service videos @ https://mitchellreelmuseum.com/index_php/videos-garcia-mitchell-reel-service-history-fishing-demo/
I did mention a new site that was being worked on, but I didn't provide a link, here it is :
https://mitchellreelmuseum.org/community/
I have the impression that it is only being tested, so I think we will have to wait a little longer before joining it, but perhaps you can give your support or find out when it will be open thanks to this Facebook page :
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1001461834297456/
What the hey; the site looks like it is cranking up; joining up info a bit buried, but it is there; I'm sure they will get things better organized as time move on.
Frank
Nice! Thanks Paul! I recently bought a pre- Garcia, pre- 300 etching Mitchell, 4th or 5th gen.?, soon maybe I can read-up on it...
I just saw on their FB page that the new forum will bee all new posts. They can't migrate any of the old posts/information in. That was from the Admin of the new site.
