I saw this, intriguing.
I'm thinking it's either a downrigger reel or Great Lakes style trolling reel. Prototype is a way over used word or term when it comes to fishing reels. ::)

Designed for fishing with your finger on the drag holding the rod with one hand or with your other hand winding in. I believe it to be an excellent design for the North West Coast winter run of Steelhead where feel and drag are critical in a single action reel, bottom bouncing a cluster or single egg in some pretty fast water in February in the middle of nowhere! It is the most prized of the Salmonoids after all and always an adventure.
