This will be the first of two bluefin trips on the spirit of adventure. the guys on the june trip last year had first crack at spots for this year. the trip will run with 24 again. the total cost for the boat alone is $27,600, not including tip, fuel surcharges, licenses or processing. divided 24 ways, the cost for the boat alone is $1150. adding a 18% tip comes out to $1350, so that is what i will be charging for this trip. i will be sending in deposits to the SOA office as soon as i get checks from everyone,. thanks! alan

I'm Stoked for this trip as this could be my last one in San Diego. Later this year my wife and I will be moving to New Braunfels Texas. We will be following our daughter's family (grandsons)... the Gulf will be about 3hrs away but it won't be anything like So Cal fishing. Is there anyone from the Bay Area I could hitch a ride to SD with? I'll pay my way of course... I don't think my old Ford is up to the task this time.
Cool
I so wish I could go in one of these trips.
sending out emails for the final payments.
I'm paid up, got my room set up at the Sea Harbor Hotel for the night of 6/13/24 and have a reservation at 5 Star fish processors ! Im looking for anyone driving down on the 13th to share a ride with. I'll pay for gas and help drive... I don't think my old Ford will make it to SD this time. I'm in the East Bay and will meet up wherever needed . Looking forward to my first time fishing with some of the AT crew...
Cool
Trips less than a month away...
With the fishing heating up and large size fish being caught you guys should be getting excited!

:D That's an understatement, at least on my part. This will prob be my last San Diego trip as I'll be moving to Texas (New Braunfels area) in the near future. Looks like I'll need to learn how to fish the Gulf. I'm still looking to share a ride down and back on this trip. I'm more than willing to pay my way and help drive...
Cool
I'm getting excited. It's going to be a busy month. The wife has a fundraising benefit for Teen Challenge. Then we celebrate her birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary. I still need to make space in the freezer, just in case 😉. I still need to pick up 1 rod.

Getting excited!! Made my first bomb today! Not sure if this is through wired so put a leash on it to be safe.

It will be a Fishing Syndicate 130# class rod and my VISX 50. I am not planning on getting beat to death like 2 years ago. Yeah its been 2 years since my last BF trip. (Thumb surgery) Bill
The trend the last few trips has been shorter/smaller jigs like sk, WJC hd, eddie bombs, heavy snipers and tungsten jigs.
The hot jigs right now are tungsten jigs because they are way heavier than lead and come in smaller sizes. Most TG jigs are shipping out of Japan right now so they wouldn't get here in time for your trip.
I highly suggest if you see any in any local store that you pick up 4-6 in the 150-180g size.
I have four Eddie bombs rigged. 2 x 16oz, 1 x 20oz, and 1 x 24oz. All with 200# mono and 300# plus hardware.
Is it worth bringing a trolling rig and pulling feathers or Marauders?
Bill
i don't think we've ever trolled on one of these trips.
Mid May we hooked 2 and landed 1 small VFT trolling Madmacs.
Heck I'm willing to try if you are good with it Alan.
Does not hurt to try.
Quote from: Bill B on June 04, 2024, 11:51:25 PMHeck I'm willing to try if you are good with it Alan.
good by me!
I always bring a trolling rig.
When moving from spot to spot you never know.
Caught many Bone-Heads and Skipjack on the troll.
And one juvenile Mako.
OK, next question.
1. Cedar plug
2. Feather
3. Marauder
4. All the above
mad mac, 200 pound fluoro leader, 130 pound trolling stick.

2. Feather
3. Marauder
4. All the above
All the above Bill.
Madmac always seems to be the best.
Although some of the catch is just big enough to eat the dang lure.
My rig is a Penn VISX 50, 130 pound braid, 200 pound leader.
Quote from: alantani on June 04, 2024, 11:41:00 PMi don't think we've ever trolled on one of these trips.
I have trolled a Madmac on the last two year's trip.
Remember that the SOA has a solid stern rail, a long trolling strap looped through the center positions will help the lure keep from popping out to the surface. If using Madmacs, stick to the smaller sizes as the boat doesn't go fast enough for the big ones to work.

Bill, of those choices, cedar plug. I would look for a Halco Lazer Pro XXDeep.
Woooohooooo! Don't tell my wife but I'm spending the next 2 days rigging trolling lures. 8) And yes I'm retired so I can spend 2 days building rigs 😉 Bill
I wouldn't expect anything trolling but if something comes along I wouldn't be thinking huge. I'd go with a cedar plug or feather. They won't be trolling at a speed for the Madmacs.

We use MadMac's, big lipped baits, feathers, feathers with birds, pretty much throw the whole kitchen sink at'um.
But nothing of size like Mark said. I think my biggest was a 8-10 pound Skipjack who lived up to it's name because the boat never stopped and I surface skipped it all the way in.
The PV deckhands told me you need to be way out, like 200+ yards for anything big. Which I've also done with zero results.
This August I have a Nomad Designs Splitstream 280 a giant flying fish lure which can be trolled at speed. It just bounces across the top like a normal flying fish. I hope to have a positive report on it in September when I return.
You guys should be stoked! The tuna are within day boat range, the San Diego caught 4-5 big tuna yesterday.
What are you most excited about for the trip?
Are you trying any new techniques or something different than the norm? If so, what is it?
PJ, this is my first BF trip in 2 years (thumb surgery). I will be fishing the Eddie Bombs almost exclusively during the night hours and will be trying to stay up later to fish them. My last trip I hooked 3 freight trains and landed 2 using a rubber band rig, during the day.
I will also be trolling. Hopeful that I will hook up, but not betting the farm.
Bill

Sounds like a good plan Bill!
You should give the drop shot style sinker rig a try. It's super quick to drop down when the fish are deep
Looking through my tackle I see I only have 25 and 40 fluorocarbon... do y'all think need some heavier ?
Hey Guys- just off a friend's 3-d on the Spirit. Don't know final tally but somewhere in 1.5 - 2 fish per for 24 of us. Very nice quality to 200# and all but 1 in the dark.
We had virtually no wind/drift w/schools hovering ~300' so lures of various sizes got bit (bombs getting down fastest). I hooked 5 on jigs from 250-420g (Short/fat, long/skinny, drop/retrieve).
Evan welcomed trollers driving around during the day. Not many takers if any in our group. Also flew kite to break monotony but only 1 hookup which got off.
Big, nice looking dines which didn't get exploited much (cept as chum)
Good luck out there,
Keith M.

Yes, I would bring 60# fluro for day time. 200# plus mono is good for night time.

I'd bring a spool of every size from 20-100# and heavy night time leader material like 180-250 flouro or 250-300# mono
been getting text messages from friends. awesome fishing!!!
:0) !!!!!
Hoping you guys nail the bluefin!! - john
Just off the Searcher last Friday. BFT were biting smaller jigs. 250 - 300 gram worked well. Also 16 oz Eddy bombs. Weather was nice, seas were flat. All BFT caught at night after about 9pm.
Rod and reel selections have been made. Drags set. Eddie Bombs rigged. Flat falls rigged. Sinkers/rubber bands re-stocked. Hooks selected and bundled. Trolling lures selected and rigged. Just need to condense everything into as few tackle boxes as possible. So far I'm down to 1 soft tackle box, 1 plastic ammo can for sinkers, 1 small box for trolling, and a reel bag.
The wife and I celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary tomorrow (June 11th) will be going out for dinner. The wife will be spending 4 days in San Diego while we fish. We will drive down the night before and meet you at the docks. Bill
Going to Los Cabos tomorrow. Got 4 days of fishing planned. Good luck to you guys on the boat. Dominick

Ok. I leave tomorrow morning but I'm already packed!! Meds, phone charger and passport packed. Checklist complete. Lunch and dinner today with my wife. A nap and a wake-up, see yous guys soon!!
Safe travels Mike. See you soon. Bill
Based on the reports you guys should KILL IT OUT THERE! Even the biguns' are biting during the day!
Looking forward to the report and pics
mike, your rods are in the car already. safe travels.

yeah, saw that. gonna need big jigs.
Bags packed, reels packed, rods packed, lead packed, bourbon packed. Momma is packing her bags so she can relax while we are fishing (have a feeling her relaxing might cost more than fishing :-\ ) Headed out noon tomorrow for our 2 hour drive to SD. Planning on meeting up at Miguel's tomorrow night and Dennys Friday am.
It's been 2 years since my last BF trip (thumb surgery). Hoping to land a cow this trip. If not, anything will be a good fish. Heck good food, good drink, good boat, and great friends. What more could I ask for.
Bill
It would make me happy to see everyone catch a cow, or at least the largest fish they have ever caught.
Can I ask an insane question? This is as good a thread as any.
If ice is crazy expensive at the dock have you guys ever considered getting instacart or something similar to deliver ice to the dock?
The processors have always given me enough ice to make the 16 hour drive home with at least a day pad and San Diego Ice Company is not that far from the Landing and it is not expensive.

And Dramamine/Bonine for Sunday. It may be unfishable then. Worse than the last 10 day! Weather has been good for the last couple of weeks and is going to suck later on Saturday, all Sunday and into Monday.
Good luck guys, catch lots of fish, take lots of pictures, and save me some for my August trip!

Just past the grapevine!
You're making great time. Safe travels Boss. Bill
Hope the weather gods are kind and you find the tuna. Have a good trip
Hey, are you free this weekend and want to get the snot beat out of you? A guy just called and cancelled. He has covid. We board the Spirit of Adventure at 10am tomorrow, returning Monday 6am. The cost is $1350, but that includes a 17% tip.

I hope to see you fine folks in the AM; and to everyone that is having a heart attack - NO that is not my load for a 3-day local Bluefin trip - I'm doing my annual 8-day RP trip :d When you see me on the October AT 8 Day this will be what I look like. We check in and load at 0800 so hoping to cross paths with the Ohana!!!
Wishing best for everyone this will certainly be interesting! - john
Good luck John. Weather is going to be a little snotty. Met up with Alan and the crew at Miguel's Cocina. The wife is staying in SD relaxing while we fish. Have a great view of the Star of India in full sail docked outside the hotel.

Did you fill the spot Alan?
Go get'm gents!
Loaded bait and we're out of the harbor
Tight lines !
I hope you limit out tonight 'cuz Saturday night and Sunday should be bad!
Well????????
I'm sure report is to come. Bill texted me: 42 BFT up to 60 lbs. 9 anglers blanked. Sporty weather.
Todd
Beyond "sporty" I'm one of those that blanked... great crew and great group of anglers . Thank you Alan for all you do and did in regards to this trip ! Top notch...
Sorry to hear it tough for some, we've all had those trips before!
I got skunked on a four day years ago so I know how the 9 feel.
I did catch fish, just none that I wanted.
Lot's of boneheads, barracuda, and Mexican White Fish.
I'm sure the 9 took fish home knowing this group!
I saw the weather forecast, and beyond sporty is a good description. 30-35knts all 3 days. That makes it hard to get the gear down and sit on a school. Also possibly rolling outta your bunk makes it tough to get shuteye. Glad everyone made it back without bodily harm
Bringing up ice. Ted has ruined me, and SD is horrible. I have no idea why SD Ice Co doesn't sell commercial salt ice. Those of you coming up in September are in for a treat!
The Man
Arctic Baluga snot is Arctic Baluga snot, part of fishing, and sucks just the same.
It wasn't sporty, it was treacherous.
Anyway, my wife and I drove down to San Diego Thursday. We had dinner with the crew at Miguel's and breakfast at Dennys. The wife spent three days relaxing while we fished.
Boarding went smooth and everyone sorted, prepped, and stowed their gear. We loaded up at the bait barge, but Evan wasn't too happy and quiet a lot was dumped due to poor health. As we exited the harbor Capt Evan and Capt Luke gave us the safety briefing and game plan for the next three days. It appears Luke is being groomed for the captains chair.
Out of the harbor we hung a left and headed south for the area where the SOA limited the night before. 6 hours later somewhere west of Ensenada we began searching for fish. There was little signs of life. The fish moved on but left no forwarding address. During the evening we motored north to the Coronado Islands to net flying fish, aka bluefin candy. We loaded up a couple dozen wrapped and froze them for later use. Not that we would use them, too windy to fly a kite.
As dawn approached we headed southwest looking for our wayward BF. With daylight I put out a large Mexican Flag feather and a couple other trollers were put out too. An hour in the Penn VISX 50 went off and another troll rig went off. An epic battle with bookend 10 pound bonitos ensued. We were victorious. Both fish were donated to the galley. This turned out to be the highlight of my trip.
As night approached we continued searching for schools of BF. Found a couple picking off 1 or 2. Then about 0230hrs we found THE school that stuck with the boat and the majority of the 42 fish were landed.
Knife jigs and Eddie Bombs ruled the night. The SOP was to cast up current dropping down to the target depth as you shuffled across the stern. Depths were anywhere from 150-300' which the captain called out as he maneuvered the boat for a drift. When you reached the down side of the drift your jig was scoped way out, retrieve and do it again. My bomb was 20 oz and in no time scoped way out. You may have been straight up and down with a 10 pound bomb the wind was so strong.
The next day we continued searching for BF in Mexican waters but no luck. Evan made the call to head north and fish an area west of SD.
By night fall I was beat. I broke down my gear and showered. This was a smart move as no BF were found that night. I woke up around 0430 hrs as we motored into the harbor. Gathered my gear on deck.
Offloading was quick and the fish filled maybe 3 carts. I canceled my reservation with Fisherman's Processing with a refund coming back to me.
Thanks to Alan I was bunked in the aft cabins with the other old men. I swear i heard the guys in the forward cabins playing ping pong in their bunks with the giant swells. Been there done that, no thank you.
Lots of new faces on this trip and it took a minute to sort out the teamwork aspect of this type of fishing. But we got it done. Yeah, yeah, I can hear the folks from the Pacific Northwest saying this is normal for us. But I'm in SoCal and it's not normal for me...and you weren't there.😜
This was a good trip, any trip you don't sink is a good trip. I have some pictures I will upload later after I climb into my bed that's not trying to throw me out.
I hope you guys have a nicer trip in July.

Great rundown Bill...
Bill tell me more about catching the flying fish, I never seen it done.
The one pic makes it seems like you were right close to the beach, what was going on there?
Here is a link to Evan netting flying fish. We were tucked in REALLY close to the Coronado Island. With the boats lights and engines we stirred up the sea lions and bait fish (flying fish included). As the FF swam close to the boat a dip net was used to bring them into the boat. They started dumping them into the live well then with the amount they netted a trash can was used. The FF were then wrapped in plastic and placed into the freezer for later use. The FF didnt survive very long in the live well, I guess they are fairly delicate. Tucked in so close, danger close maybe 25 yards at times, we were out of the wind and swells. In the still pictures Evan and I are on the upper deck starboard side. Bill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTS3wb2JxKU
We dipped them at night on the 8 day as well.
Todd
Were you allowed to fish while they netted FF? Seems like a good spot to catch some bass....
You need tuna tubes to keep alive. I hear they're good on a sinker rig!
Found these guys on the spirit of adventure website
It's kind of fun catching them with a dip net. Something to do at night on the anchor
We did cast a little while the crew caught flying fish but to little effect: I caught a calico, Chris caught a mackerel. Very small fish. The real show was watching the 400+lb sea lions chase and eat flying fish.
All of our tuna were caught between 9pm and 5am starting Saturday night - the peak was midnight-3am. It was a very narrow window of productive fishing, book-ended by hours of rough seas. The trick was to get the lure to the strike zone and keep it there. Cast into the drift like Bill mentioned and reset once the line started angling out.
Btw, Bill's bonito was tasty! The crew bled, filleted, and chilled it immediately, then Abraham served it up as sashimi and poke.
Great hanging out with everyone! Here's a pic of Isaac and me. These weighed in around 60# gutted and gilled.
Great pic of you and Isaac!
Bonito is very good, especially the variety that get that size. Fantastic ceviche, and really nice grilled to just past rare.
The man
Last year we hid behind San Clemente Island for 3 out of 4 days on the tail end of Hurricane Hillary.
It sucked but we made the best of it at night catching flying fish and squid.
The PV is much smaller than the SOA, we actually had seal chased flying fish fly up on the deck trying to get away from the seals. I was surprised at how big they were. a couple guys got hit by them and it smarted. The deckhands did the same thing but we never got to use them...
