well, Its my time to built the bigger bro of my T4N1 reel, the big old 114h XN, I couldnt have the kit when Randy offered years ago but lucky me was on the time and place to grab the one my compadre Gregg put on sale some weeks ago.
I have a donor 114h reel which is missing the spool and half frame that I never cared to build it back until getting that tiburon XN kit recently, then got some SS parts and the drag upgrade pack from Jason as this one https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,37574.0.html
(https://alantani.com/gallery/38/3592-240224005815-386462192.jpeg)
the rings that came on the donor reel were to ugly with some corrosion, so I sanded them and painted them bright red with 3 final coats of spray urethane, pretty sure it wont hold but even when they got scratched and missing spots of paint will look 3x better than how they were before ^-^ and I can always take them out and install the shiny ones that Jason sent me along the SS parts.

I have two brass dogs and used them to help me to cut the sideplate to adapt a second dog, but I will order some SS 114 dogs from mystic in few days, I liked the sound of non-syncro dogs but still dont know if I will installed syncro or non-syncro dogs when finally got the SS dogs.
the think I need to order before build the reel and I havent found where to get it is the Eccentric Jack, the one that come with the donor reel has the "legs" just bent but Im looking for the reinforced Jack, on Mystic parts the part 11-114 shows a picture of the old style jack not the reinforced one, I dont know if thats the one they send or the reinforced one and just never updated that picture

this an old post from Sal where he recommend to use the reinforced Jack with beefer tabs
(https://alantani.com/gallery/38/3592-240224011321-38660172.jpeg)
so, still missing to finish the reel although I have the stock parts to build it but Im not in a hurry.
- 2 SS dogs
- Reinforced Eccentric Jack
- take the 80# braid out and install 100# braid on it, its better here for abrasion purposes to use heavy braid line
Looking good Alex!!
Those red rings are unusual looking. But it's kinda cool I like it. Happy to have contributed.

thanks to you amigo
agree on the rings, I might do something similar to my 113hXN reel ::) ::)
The T60XN lives on! As the "Red Grouper"... Nice work Alex, I like that red ring look.
Looks great. I like mine. I just need to fish it more.
Todd
Nice build Alejandro.
I like the rings as well.
Do you have any places where you could get those anodized near you?
If so please let me know, anodizing/chrome plating shops here in the Peoples Republic are closing left and right. I use to use a guy in Sacramento but he pulled the plug a few years ago and moved to the Free State of Nevada.
Thanks,
Steve
Looks good! Can't wait to get the post operation report

The Penn rings are brass. They cannot be anodized. Powder coating is the preferred method if you want colors. You usually need to blast off all the old chrome first.
I have done a bit for myself and for a few other members that spoke kindly of my home state of California 8) . Not too tricky, but does require some equipment. Powder coating services are usually not too hard to find here, as the process doesn't involve toxic chemicals.

beautiful work, gentlemen!
Awesome build amigo! That will be a hit amongst all your fellow pangueros down in Baja.

Jurelometer,
Nice build as well, I prefer black sided Penn's over red but I'm not that picky.
Lesson for the day: brass cannot be anodized. There is a powder coater I use in Rancho Cordova, I'll hit him up in the future.
For the record: I Love California's recreational activities and weather, been here for 45+ years!
I'll leave it at that. :d
What city do you live in?
Thanks,
Steve
"Kin-folks said Californiee is the place you outta be, so they loaded-up the car and moved to Berkley..." Actually Hayward, where I was borne, but it didn't rhyme. My Parents moved there in '54 from Minnesota.
It's hard to beat the geographical/ecosystem variety of Calie. I haven't been everywhere, but I've never seen it anywhere else. I also like people variety, and Calie has it. But there's too doggon many of them! Also, the various types don't blend together as well as they could, like here.
It's tax season and I'm enjoying the thought that Hawaii dosen't take 5% of many types of income as the"PRC" does. I'll definitely benefit from that. And that's another negative, it costs so much for the middle and lower class to live there comfortably. Housing and many other durable and non-durables are expensive here, electricity is crazy expensive. I'd love to see a cost/benifit comparison done, Hawaii vs Calie, maybe it's even more expensive here?
And I thought we were relatively fire disaster safe, until the fire in Lahaina. Then there's them hurricanes and possible tsunami's. These kinda events have a real negative impact on local economies.

Steve, well I dont know any places that can do the anodizing or chrome plating, I did painted the rings as experiment and I liked but I will use the rings and I will think on powder coating them when I saw them with lots of scratches and with tons of spots missing paint
@Sabaman1, thanks bud
@Alan tani, thanks Jefe
WOW! That is one gorgeous red reel. Hope to see the finished product soon. Any luck finding a reinforced eccentric jack?
I have yet to fish my T60XN. Mine is silver frame, black spool and red side plates... I also have the 3/0 and 4/0 XN reels in same colors... I've fished both of those and they preformed as you would expect. Caught my first Yellow tail on the 4/0 XN... a 25# fish.
Cool

thanks amigo, I found one used but in great shape a reinforced eccentric jack on my miscellaneous parts box while looking for some screws of different sizes for another reel, the 114h eccentric jack was dirty but it cleaned up really good and I used the buffer wheel a bit with the dremel to give it some shine
Great looking reel, enjoy the project!
I also prefer the black/red side plates/rings.
Hope you don't ever intend to take it on a Panga :(

Well if you look at my tackle that I take to sea on similar size boats, the reels are scratched and dinged. The rods are repaired from someone sitting or falling on top of them or high sticking. Small boat fishing here is fairly rough stuff. Maybe you fish in a bit more protected waters?

same deal here, panga boats are rough with fishing gear, sometimes they dont have enough rod holders so your expensive fishing rod and reel are there jumping and bumping against each other or the panga rails, but it what it is, after all fishing reels are nothing but weapons to get the fish, right?
I must admit that some old and unique reels deserve to spend their time on the shelf but this one 114h dont belong to the shelf ^-^

No sir. The reel is merely an instrument.
I am the weapon.

I like that Jason!
May, ok I will, steal it.
well, finally have time between rod / reel repairs to go through some of my personal reels that needed attention.
as is the case of the 114h XN
I installed the SS complete kit that I got from Jason (in the 1st page)
I couldn't fit the 6 drag washers that came in the 3 sevens insert kit, I read some posts he made on his section that he offered different thickness in drag washers and keyed metal washers in case someone had any problem fitting the 6-drag washers on the adapter of their main gears but of course that is not an option anymore with Adam no longer working on his adapters/parts, well I ended up installing 5 keyed metal washers and 6 drag washers, the 6th drag washer is just there as Double drag washer (mostly as spacer) just before the last thick metal keyed metal washer
as you can see there is no room for another metal washer because the last drag washer wont fit inside of the adapter
(https://alantani.com/gallery/39/3592-141124011031-391472170.jpeg)
even like that I could reach 42# drag with that setup, I had to use my both hands to pull the line from the reel with the scale to be able to reach 42# and Im pretty sure I could have reached more but I didnt wanted to tried and hurt myself if something broke while pulling 50# drag directly from the reel, so I stopped there, in the real world I see myself in problems if I have to be on a Tug-o-war with a big fish pulling 40# or more of drag, so, Im happy with the reel as is, I dont think I will try to install the 6th keyed metal washer later but is good to have the option if I find some thinner metals, but I dont promises anything.
I filed a bit on the edges of the yoke to have an smooth transition with the eccentric Jack when moving the lever to activate the freespool to drag, it was kind rough before but now is an smooth operator !!
I also installed a 2nd SS dog, nothing new here, so move on !
lastly I have a brand new daiwa sealine 600H handle with the blade much longer than the stock 6/0 handle and it fits perfectly on the 114h SS sleeve, but the knob was so small, so I drilled out the stock knob and installed a VISX handle knob, its too heavy for my taste but it was the only handle knob I have on hand that fit the 8mm hole on the handle, for know it works
(https://alantani.com/gallery/39/3592-141124011307-391562052.jpeg)
and thats it, its ready to get some fish on the Panga

Oh wow! That is an awesome build. :d
Looks great Alex! Do the dogs alternate or are they simultaneous in operation?
Looks great. I love mine but don't fish it much as I have almost too many reels.
Cheers
Todd
Deserves a Cortez shifter if Tom has any.
I'm still jealous of this reel. And with good reason.
Quote from: sabaman1 on November 14, 2024, 05:27:24 AMLooks great Alex! Do the dogs alternate or are they simultaneous in operation?
they're simultaneous, I was going to go with an alternated dogs but since this reel has a 10 teeth Sleeve the backplay on the handle is not that bad.

Alex, it will be a great reel for yoyo fishing Jurel!

Alex, on the 60xxh how did you achieve the blue scaled pattern underwrap? I really like that pattern!

its a thread wrapping technique called, dragon scale wraps, there are few different ways to achieve that pattern, I think I used two different ways in that rod, I was testing new wraps techniques on my own rod ;D
I havent done those dragon scales again LOL, but on my next time I will use a thicker thread to make the dragon scales pattern so it will be more noticeable
Alex, your Red Grouper reel on your Calstar Dead Pool rod is a piece of art, and a heck of a fish catching tool. Your work certainly motivates me to step up my game a notch or two. Thanks for sharing your artistry!
thanks amigo Macflyer, this has to be one of the best compliments I have gotten for my builds ^-^
Alex, do you have any youtube videos of your techniques used in rod wrapping. Your finishes on your rods are really exceptional. Do you use flexcoat?
Look here.

nope, nothing on youtube from me, there are plenty of videos about rod wrapping and different wrapping techniques, maybe one day I will do a video
