Title: Staro Reels
Post by: sandbar on March 01, 2024, 06:55:08 PM
Has anyone ever seen a schematic for these reels?
I started tinkering with one that I purchased inexpensively just to get a look inside.
I have run into some parts that are challenging. I may have broken the "no tampering" rule on page 12.
Perhaps they didn't publish schematics intentionally.
I will post some pictures of what I have apart so far.

We discussed the Staro a little here. (https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,37653.0.html)

Here are some pictures of what I have disassembled so far.
This reel is very different from what I have seen and I intend to proceed with caution.

I haven't had either of mine completely apart so I'm no help at all. That's looking pretty involved.  :o

Cool!
Not as many parts as I thought there would be. So, it looks like a non-ball bearing(bushing) reel?

I'm going to start with the simple things first. Trying to figure out if is possible to remove the main gear for cleaning. The spring loaded oil port on the crankshaft is not operational and needs to be cleaned. I don't know if the handle threads portion will unscrew from the shaft or the shaft may unscrew from the gear. I want to try to insert a rod through the threaded piece on the top of the shaft to see what happens. Still a bit gun shy.

One bushing on the pinion gear.
Still don't have the crankshaft apart yet. Maybe 1 bushing. Maybe 2.

Interesting breakdown. I just got another staro reel. The anti reverse does not seem to work. Have not had chance to swap rotors with my functional Staro that i repaired with help of Midway Tommy. I assume anti reverse elements are in the drag neck adjustment attached to body!

I will get back on it soon. I lost my work table for a bit.

Was able to swap rotors with another Staro. The issue is in main body. Any idea how the anti reverse works?

Not yet. Still without a work area and spare time is non-existent. Can't wait to get back on it. I have several reels in pieces that I want to finish.

I await your solution and findings on Staro. It looks complicated

The neck area of staro apparently has a clutch mechanism that serves as both drag and anti reverse. My non functional reel, rotors seem fairly functional in swaps with other reels. Can't figure out the clutch system and getting into housing!! No schematic

Some pictures of drag and clutch. Can't figure out how to get into this! When you turn the black drag dial from 0 to 10. Can feel it tightens. Just no anti reverse.

Rotate the top plate so the nub on one of the 3 prongs lines up about the middle of the 500-2731. That will line up all 3 notches and it just pulls up.

Note the red dot. There is a threaded pin that prevents rotation of clutch. Any ideas?

You can bend it to get the notch to move. Matter of fact you can break it off to prevent use locktite. Bigger issue. Is how to get main gear off??

I opened clutch drag mechanism. Cleaned and re assemble reel. Still no anti reverse. Theory its behind main gear and I can't access

Mystery solved. If you remove shaft and pinion gear. You will find a spring loaded dog. The dog has to be under the pinion gear housing. Mine was miss aligned under neath a shim blocking the anti reverse function. See sandbar pictures of pinion geR and housing

After struggling and taking everthing apart! I feel like i know staro reels well enough except how to access main gear. The next staro will be documented more!!

I found a staro reel with no anti reverse!! My problem is i cant remove the rotor assembly off the shaft. Last time i remember sliding off easily. The shaft slides easily as shown! How do you remove the drag housing???

I was able to remove rotor by removing an oil port on side

The clutch has a dog that fits under a set of washers under pinion. Unfortunately this dog was well worn and no longer capable of holding an anti reverse function. I tried all possible placements. Six possibilities and two orientations with three places dog could fit.

The metal brass color dog is very worn on the end as not to work and bite into pinion. It is held in by a tapped post which looks hard to remove. A solution is to build it up with epoxy metal clay. Will try to see if it works. Plan A. Plan b is to remove dog and fabricate a dog from a metal!
