Title: Back play in handle of Quantum spinning reel ree
Post by: Fishgolfman on June 15, 2024, 07:11:33 PM
A little handle backplay in spinning reels are acceptable. I was fishing a quantum spinning reel whose model number i don't remember but one that does not have a anti reverse system switch. It was plain irritating!! Backplay was an eighth of a crank or more.  I assume it's a bearing system anti reverse. Dirty or replace bearing?? Its a cheapo reel but i have 5 spools for it making it really versatile in fresh water situations

How much lateral movement in the maingear shaft?  The further the main/pinion get out of mesh the more circumferential play will be apparent.

You will have to explain that more! Are you saying that main gear shaft to handle may have too much flexibility ie bearing or bushing too loose?

The main gear may need a shim under the LHS bearing to increase the engagement with the pinion gear.  The more it is backed out of mesh the more "play" you have in the handle.  It is more art than science to tighten it up, it is just like adjusting the diff in your rear axle.

It's a shimano sedona 4000. I will pull schematic and take apart and clean.  If it's a bushing i will replace with a bearing. I have lots of shims as well or fabricate one! Thanks. Will let you all know if i solve problem!

The Quantum is actually a Shimano Sedona?
If it's a roller bearing AR, it could be the springs that'ed supposed to put pressure on the rollers are weak. Solution; never had the problem, so either a new AR, or disassemble the present one and bend those springs. It's a pretty tedious endeavor.
Shimano makes some nice AR's as they go in spinning reels.

It thought it was a quantum but backplay is in shimano as well. Both reels are out of wack. Cant find a quantum schematic but shimano easy

I know.. should be using dq , zebco cardinals or mitchells! But legacy reels with spool extra galore! My bad

I think this should work:

Since the AR is on the front of the reel, you can determine how much it is contributing to handle backplay.  Just grab the rotor and try to turn it backwards and see how far it rotates.  Don't release the rotor tension and try turning the handle backwards.  Any remaining backplay from turning the handle is coming from the drive train. But if the rotor backplay is minimal, handle backplay should not be a functional issue, maybe just something that you find annoying.

For generic anti-reverse clutch bearings, you will get very little backplay, and it will be consistent.  If the rollers are sticking a bit an not locking right away, you are already screwed, and the clutch is failing.  A failing clutch is unlikely to consistently slip the same amount each time before engaging.

Dunno how much backplay those larger Shimano specific roller clutch assemblies require to engage. but the ramp length that the rollers have for travel will give you a pretty good idea.

Practically, near zero. If you grab the rotor and lean on it, maybe a few degrees. That's on a 10000 size spinner :)

Both reels fixed. The quantum needed shims to tighten meshing. The shimano also need shims and handle tightening.
