Title: Another 10hr
Post by: JasonGotaProblem on July 21, 2024, 01:06:22 PM
I can't believe it's been almost a year since I did those 2 10hr trips. I'm gonna book another one as my birthday gift to myself. I'll probably do Hubbard's again sometime early August, anyone wanna join?

Your in the Tampa area aren't you Jason?

My Dad lived in the Pensacola area.

Once his house sells Kelly and I are going to fly down there for his celebration of life.

I'd sure like to hook up and do some fishing.

I'm interested. But FYI Tampa and Pensacola are about 8hrs apart

Booked for this sunday. Party time. Red snapper season ends the 31st. Maybe I'll get one this time.

Leaving in roughly 60 hours. I guess I should start packing.

I'm already mostly packed. I need swivels, and I can't find my 100# mono or the double barrel crimps for the #100 mono. But none of that is all that expensive.

So far it looks like for the 3 rigs I'm allowed I'm bringing
Accurate 270 magnum (50# braid 30# rod, 80# flouro leader the fun one)
Komodo 463 (50# braid 50# rod 80# flouro, the practical one)
Penn Baja special (65# braid 60# rod 100# mono leader, the one I hope I have a reason to use)

Lots of 6oz and 8oz lead, 4/0 and 7/0 circle hooks, a few sabiki lures, and unlike last time: SUNSCREEN AND A HAT.

Jason, if you ever get a chance to go to Destin we have always limited out red snapper(2Ea) then, plus black bass & Vermilion on the "Sweet Jody" doesn't take as long to get to them on the gulf. This Party boat-no braid allowed :fish

Once I saw a 400 lb Jew fish on the docks at Destin, it looked at least 6ft with it's eyeballs hanging down as big as softballs !

Don't catch em' all...

I am so pumped it's unbelievable. I am setting 5 alarms but the most important one, I asked my light sleeping wife to make sure to wake me up. I've never in my life asked her to wake up early on my behalf. But this is special.

My god that was awesome. You can't keep Most species of grouper til September here in the Florida Gulf or I'd have a serious freezer problem. But I got 3 good sized lane snapper and a bunch of other non keepers. But more than anything the people around me were a ton of fun and the trip so far was a ton of fun. Im still like an hour from the dock. I don't wanna jinx it.

Pics when I have more service

Sounds like you slayed them Jason! So which combo did what & how many poles does the boat allow you to have out? On the party boats I been on I always used their gear (1ea.) Senator 112 maybe? I am retired so I can ask 50 questions like a 2 yr old...
Title: Re: Another 10hr
Post by: JasonGotaProblem on July 29, 2024, 01:39:23 PM
So I can give a better write up now.

We were allowed 3 rods. As usual I'm far too focused on playing with my toys and not focused enough on catching fish. But I have fun. I ended up leaving my Baja and bringing my everol. I realized I had 50# braid on everything and might want to bring something heavier just in case.

We got a fair amount of rain. A lot more than the forecast suggested. But on a hot July day I didn't hear anyone complaining.

I can't help wondering if they read this site because none of my minor complaints from last trip are still valid. I didn't like that you couldn't bring phones. That Changed. I hated that 3 of the 10 hours were spent listening to super cheesy disco music. That definitely changed. The music was so good this time I had to look up a song to find the artist because I liked it so much. The food was good, and the deckhands, the captain, and the cook, were chill and helpful. But that wasn't a change from last time they were all cool then too. I highly recommend Hubbard's. After tips, meal pass, fees, etc im out about 220. Not bad for what I got out of the trip.

I was the first one to put a fish on the deck but the last one to put my first fish in the cooler. But again I blame that on trying to play with my toys and target big fish instead of targeting meat. I realized I was down to my last hour of fishing time and got serious I went to my lightest and most sensitive rod with a smaller bait and a more active presentation and got all my 3 lane snapper in the last half hour of fishing time. Saw a dude leaving with about 25 fish. I guess he was serious the whole time.

I also got to put my knots to the test as I hooked the bottom once, on my very last drop of the day, and couldn't break it off for the life of me. One of the deck hands had to help, he showed me a new trick, and eventually got me free after a lot of fighting but the line never broke. The hook bent. So my FG leader knot and my crimps are better than I thought.

More pics. The skies were truly awesome looking out there. I swear mid day I saw sunset colors but the phone didn't really capture it so it may have been my glasses. But whatever, I enjoyed it.

And I have come to a conclusion. F mono. When I was using mono leaders all I did was get bait stolen. Didn't catch anything. Hardly felt anything. Lost a lot of bait. When I switched back to flouro I felt every nudge on the bait.  And caught fish.

You got the sunset. I like that "rock release" hook you're using. Fun and learning. We have some snappers here with a very similar color pattern, except the colors are completely different; blue and green.

So the final chapter to this. The fish got put to great use. Asian street tacos.

Which is a fancy way of saying I swapped the cumin for ginger and the oregano for more cilantro, but didn't change much else other than adding teriyaki to the marinade. Served with carrot shreds diced sweet peppers kimchi and some diced spinach because we didn't have lettuce or cabbage.

I put the bowl of fish in the ice bath because I was afraid I'd filet too slowly and it would get warm.  I still have leftovers for tonight.

It's the so called "yum yum sauce" aka mayo with some seasoning. But when you say it like that it takes away all the mystique.

I may go on another trip from the east coast next weekend.

Trip leaves 7pm Friday, in 29 hours. Weather might cooperate. Low pressure. Not sure the fish care but the weather pattern sure seems to.

My car is packed already,I'm leaving directly from work. Super excited, but also strangely nervous. I'm sure it'll be great.

It`s going to be a beautiful night , the rain will be well North of us . Wind out of the South southeast under 10mph, sea chop 1.5    Were I am standing  ,A fish coming over the rail every 3 minutes.
Only half the boat is booked ,so the tangles should be at a minimum .

After not being up to do any fishing stuff this summer, I am excited to get to make a trip out to Canaveral in October. I *think* it's the same charter-Ocean Obsession still? Hopefully I'm in good enough shape to stand up to a 10 hour day on the boat again by then!

Excited to see how you boys do tomorrow!

Couple comments. I am not sure where Joe is getting his depths, but my metered braid suggested our range was 100-140' deep. we were more than 20 miles out.

You can't keep Goliath or Bermuda grouper. The adage is "round tail - go to jail"

We all ate our fill of pan seared cajun snapper 2 nights in a row. the rest is headed to the freezer.

Seas were worse than any previous trip I've been on. But from my understanding still not that bad. My legs are sore. But then I spend most my week sitting.
