Hello new member here. I have cleaned and lubricated reel, and the thumb release for free spool won't disengage unless the tension cap is removed.
Once the cap is taken off the mechanism works perfectly. The axle pushes against the cap, so obviously something is either not seated properly or some other problem. Ideas?
Thanks all
weird. sometimes, the brakes are extended during assembly, but then the side plate would not seat properly. not sure what's going on with this one. so often, i will take a reel apart, then put it together multiple times and not see a problem, only to have it start working properly for no apparent reason. like i said. weird..... :-\
Thanks Alan. ya the axle extends towards the crank handle when I deploy the release. However it is blocked from doing so when the tension cap is on. Removing the cap allows the axle the space it needs. Seems like the other side must be impeded.
Is your spool pinion fully seated in place? What about the tension cap shims? Have you experimented removing one of them? Lastly, is the axle bent? I've had this happen before with a reel I bought for parts. The axle looked straight, but once I was able to get another, I noticed it had a very slight curve to it. Once the axle was swapped, the reel spun as it should.
I am having the exact same problem with the exact same reel. Did you ever resolve it? It looked to me like the gears pressed onto the axle were maybe shifted and not allowing clearance but I could not for the life of me figure out how that could happen. I took it apart and dropped the axle into the far side bearing and it seems to seat lower so I know there is nothing obstructing it, it just seems that where the clip connects to the axle gears is in the wrong place. It worked great for years before this though.
