Title: Tanacom 800 Battery
Post by: Crab Pot on September 01, 2024, 11:21:53 PM
Just pulled the trigger on a new Tanacom 800 electric reel.

What portable batteries should I be looking to get for it?

Thanks,

Steve

I thought you were looking for a 500?  The 800 is a big reel.  I have a Tanacom Bull 750fe on a bent butt rod that stays in the rod holder.

I was Lee but Alan informed me the 500 wasn't a good option for a kite rod.

I'll "heaft" some extra weight for a dual purpose reel.

Look at the Nocqua batteries or get a small LiPO4 battery.

I like my Tanacom Bull 750fe and with the help of a rail the weight should not be a issue.

I have a Shimano Plemio 3000 which is basically a 500 size. The battery I use is a LIFEPO4 12V 20AH battery which I added XT60 connectors to the cord and the battery.  On a 3/4 day fishing trip (which is about 6-7 hours fishing) my battery only went down to about 75-80% at the end of the trip.  It's approximately 5 lbs and I leave it on the floor when fishing.

Stick with LIFEPO4 than Lead because LIFEPO4 is better in every conceivable metric (except price but it has gone down considerably).

Make sure the battery matches as close as possible or exceeds your reel's max current draw (amp) requirements.  For the tanacom 800 max current draw is 33A.  The battery I use is 30A max (which is close enough).  Also you will need a special charger because most batteries to not include one.

I've seen people use the batteries that look like bottles which attaches directly to reel so the reel is cordless.  I think the smallest ones are 5AH and the folks that used them say two of those bottles will last them a whole day.

Lee (keta) sent me the idea in a PM jzman.

I'm leaning towards a "bottle type" battery connected to my belt, but I'll keep this in mind.

"WHEN" I get another boat (no matter what She Who Will Be Obeid Says) I'll hard wire in a few locations as well.

All Day!

Never fished below 350' but with checking bait, reeling in fish, I'm sure that'll take it's toll.

Even getting line spooled on an electric "smart" reel can be a lengthy process.

Don't get me started on the automatic jigging function.

Those Daiwa batteries don't have a good reputation.

Both, actually, though I haven't had any cord problems. I do use a right angle cord first, seems to relieve the strain.

My Abyss Battery arrived yesterday.

The owners manual is pretty straight forward. The battery had a 50% charge on arivial and took about an hour to get fully charged. I got the kit which encluded a cord, carrier, chargers, and battery. Abyss also added four decals.

I was bit suprised by the weight given it's size but nothing that isn't manageble.

😂😂😂

I always know I'm in trouble when the owner's & operation manual is larger than the product!

On our 2022 Subaru Outback, the main owners manual is nearly 800 pages.

The additional "tech" manual is another 400+ pages.

The other warranty and maintenance information stuff is maybe 40 pages total.

Many electronic items I have —- have very detailed manuals.

Others like our iPads, MacBooks, iPhones, iPods —- have very little written information.  They expect you to go online and find what you need.

We have a file cabinet drawer full of organized household manuals for various items over the years.  They are organized by less than $100 & over $100.

Then I have (2) full drawers in one of my outer shops completely full of owners manuals for everything from power tools to shop purchases.  Occasionally they come in handy.

Surprising what one can learn with a cup of coffee and a couple of hours studying a manual.  I recommend it at least once for every new purchase.

Best, Fred

Just a quick update on the Abyss Battery.

It worked flawlessly with the rod attachment cradle and was easy to operate and use. Not perfect, I had it mounted on the foregrip, but manageable. It's nice to put the rod down and not have to get untethered. I'm not sure how many drops we made but I'm going to guess it was north of 30 with a one pound weight at the least and multiple Chill Pepper retrieves with single and doubles.

I just got done cleaning my gear and hit the button to check the level of charge. To my surprise it was still showing fully charged.

Great product,

Steve
