Title: Cortez Conversions JigMaster Magnum
Post by: Cortez_Conversions on September 10, 2024, 03:39:48 PM
Well, it's been a while, but the JigMaster Magnums are finally done!

For those who don't know...
Years ago, Accurate made a short run of JigMaster side plates that used Penn 113H, 4/0 internals. This gave the angler a much more compact reel that had the drivetrain of the bionic Penn Senator 113H!

I prototyped  this reel and fished it at Cedros Island and really dig it! Small enough to throw irons and strong enough to troll with.
This is the mid-width "99" size that holds 400 yards of JB Line One 65lb braid with room for a top shot.

Colors will be limited.

The kit will include both right and left side plates and spool. You will have the option to add one of my new half frames with rod clamp if you so desire. Of course, all assembly hardware is included. You will need to source the 113H parts yourself, or I can build it complete for you with an additional cost of parts and labor. This offer is only for stock Penn parts, no aftermarket parts.
I'll have some pics shortly.
Stay tuned!

so, a buddy came by this morning to pick up a reel and asked a question.  what is my favorite star drag reel for yellowtail?  honestly, i really don't have one.  for open water, you can land a 25 pound yellowtail with 30 pound fluoro and 10 pounds of drag. i did that twice on the first cedros trip a couple of months ago.  around structure, it's different.  the traditional recommendation has been a minimum of 15 pounds of drag to keep them away from the rocks.  that means a 50 pound line class reel with a 30% drag setting of 15 pounds.  that also usually means a lever drag reel.

for star drag reels, a general rule of thumb is that you can get a maximum of 5 pounds of drag for every drag washer that you have inside the main gear.  a good working load would be half.  so figure that a jigmaster will give you 15 pounds of drag when the star is vein popping tight.  that's enough drag to cause damage to the soft brass parts in the drive train.  figure a good working load for a jigmaster being 5-8 pounds.  but all of you knew this already.

so now back to original question.  a good star drag reel for yellowtail?  it looks like we've got one!!!!

today is a good day to learn something new !

thanks Jefe for that rule of thumb, it matched 100% on my custom drag upgrade I installed on a ProGear 545 that Bryan Young sold me last march (similar to this new reel from Tom), I was able to fit 6 octagon cut drag washers on a Lee "Keta drag adapter", I could reach 28# and still room to tighten the star a bit more.
it makes sense with that rule of thumb.

that PG 545 its my new favorite reel because of the size and power but mostly because of the moho that came with it considering it belonged to Bryan.

Sorry for the tease and no follow thru....

I'm kind of in a quandary about how to sell these kits.

Because they are a hybrid between a JigMaster and the 113H Senator, that means you guys would technically need to have two donor reels to rob parts from.

I'm thinking that they will be sold as a true custom build to order kit/reel from my bench. The options would be a complete reel that would include loaded plates with eccentric lever, frame with clamp, spool and handle blank with either a grip from Alan Tani or one of my acrylic grips, or just loaded side plates with eccentric lever and spool.

I haven't run the final numbers yet, but I'm guessing the plate and spool kit will run about $250 and the full Monty around $350. And again, either option will have all internals assembled.

I'll get some pics up next week.

Yes, the eccentric, eccentric jack, and eccentric spring. Not sure what else right off hand. I'll put together a full parts list if everyone decides they want the DIY option as well.

Price for the JigMaster Magnum mid-width(99) side plates and spool kit will be $210.00 plus $10 shipping in the US via USPS.
The kit will include the right and left plates, spool, and eccentric lever. The parts kit will include stainless steel hardware, bearings, bearing cups, screws, clicker knob assembly, and pinion yoke, it will also come with a list of parts you will need to source from both JigMaster and 113H reels.

This build requires an aftermarket 99 width frame from Cortez Conversions, Accurate, or Tiburon and is not included in the kit.

I only have Black, Red, and Ice Blue plate kits in stock, and only a few of each at the moment. The spools will only come in Black, unless there's a group buy.

If you're interested in a kit, PM me and I'll process orders first come, first served.

If you would like me to build a complete reel for you, please PM me and we can discuss pricing and lead times.

Well, I'm here now to show off my new Cortez Conversions 99 jigmaster magnum.

It's got 113h 4/1 gears from Bryan Young, fresh ht-100 drag stack, Tom's steel gear sleeve, Lee's steel dog, and also Tom's killer half frame, and custom acrylic knob.

The build was fairly easy. Jigmaster parts: eccentric, eccentric spring, eccentric jack, shift lever nut, and clicker ring. Rest of parts are 113h: bridge, sleeve, gears, drags, dog, dog spring, scalloped handle nut, 113h handle

All I can say is what a beast of a reel. Huge shout out to Tom for offering this limited run of a magnificent piece of engineering to the Ohana !!

Yes Mark, I have a silver 541, and it's wider and bulky compared to Tom's 99 with his lightweight half frame. The 541 did cost less, but I couldn't pass on this opportunity. My PG545's have limitations on line capacity for live bait albacore. The 99 width line capacity is just right. Plus I can also use it for halibut and ling cod

I missed that it's a 99 size! A 545 doesn't have enough capacity for Albies? You don't use spectra backing? I used smaller reels for Albies back when they were a thing down here with straight 25 mono and never felt that I didn't have enough line.

Its official, my new Cortez Conversions 99 jigmaster MAGNUM is no longer a virgin !!

Just got home from an albacore charter trip in Westport(aka tuna town). The magnum brought 13 nice albacore to gaff, then my topshot knot failed, so I set it aside and grabbed rod #2 that has a Cortez Conversions 99 jigmaster(non magnum version), and pulled in 11 more albacore. 10 guys plugged the boat with 205 albies in just over 8 hours. Back home 36 hours early. Loving my new magnum jigmaster !!

Huge shout out to Tom for creating the new
Magnum 99 jigmaster !!

Good looking reel. Albacore usually average around 17 lbs give or take a bit. 30 plus is possible but not common. You can also get into peanuts or 8 to 10 lbers.

There was a year in Morro bay when the albacore were in the 40's with some 60+. Those things were tough
