Title: VISX vs Makaira vs Talica
Post by: troutman561 on September 17, 2024, 03:07:28 PM
Good morning. I think this is the correct spot to ask this as other similar topics seem to be here.

Anyhow, my main use for these reels will mainly be big grouper digging and occasionally Yellowfin to 100lbs. I am currently running a Speedmaster 16 for my grouper digging reel and after this weekend it's time to step up my game. I got rocked by some big fish way more than I'd like and I need more cranking power (or maybe hit the gym?). I like the idea of a low speed gear ratio below 2 that sits in a high quality frame. While I love Shimano, unless I'm convinced otherwise they are not my first choice automatically in this price range because they do not tend to provide parts support long term.

I have read the other threads on here similar comparison now that multiple years have gone by, people should have some solid comparisons.

I keep my stuff long term so part support is important. Reliability of course, and mainly cranking power. Size wise I want to stay in the VISX 20 or equivalent size. I did read the 16 with a 20 handle is solid but I want the most cranking power I can get. Line capacity on any of these far exceeds what I'd ever need so that's not a factor. I feel like I can't go wrong with any of these choices. Thanks in advance.

MAK or VISX are both good reels.

The VISX 16 has a higher low gear, 1.6:1 than the VISX 20, 1.4:1.

The MAK 16SEA AND 20SEA both have lower low gears,  1.3:1.

My favorite big fish reel is the VISX 16 but for your needs a lower gear ratio would be better.  The difference between the VISX 20 and both of the MAKS is not enough to matter, size and weight does.  I would consider the MAK 16SEA.

I want to find a source for 1:1 low gears for my VISX 12 and 16.  Cal's said that as of now I have been the only one interested.

Go with a 16 size if line capacity is not an issue.  IMO the 20 size reels are big, heavy and uncomfortable to use.

I was surprised to see the specs with the 20 being nearly a pound heavier. But does that pound make up for increased cranking. Or will the 20's handle on the 16 still be significantly better than the Speedmaster?

Thanks for the intel guys. Since the Mak20 is only 5oz heavier vs the 16, I went that route since it already does have a bigger handle. While the gear ratio in low gear is a bit higher than the 16, I feel like everything else about it makes up for that. I also like the idea of a slightly lower "high" gear as well once I get the fish away from the bottom. I grew up fishing 50w reels standup so I don't think this will a problem. I appreciate all the input. I'll likely be buying a 16 to add to the arsenal at some point too.
