Thank you to those that donated the parts and Cal's for the 1:1 low gear. Turnaround at Cal's was less than 2 weeks. It is spooled with 130# hollow JB Line 1 and the drag is set to 40# at strike. I can get more drag but I do not need it.

made a gold downrigger did you? ;D
holy wacamole!!
1:1 and 40# strike, let me know when can I borrow it cuz I need to lift the motor of my old car.
As I told Lee via PM, straight up crankenstein.
Plan A is to put it on a 5'6" 100# rod, catch a skipjack and drop it to the bottom and see what eats it.

The Man
That is really what fishing is all about, now isn't it?
The Mak 50 SEa has 3.2:1/1:1 gears from the factory.

Yup, but a MAK50 SEa wasn't sitting on my shelf gathering dust.

Lee,
I love that you are repurposing the golden oldies. They don't deserve to be put out to pasture.

Yup, I fish my VISX 20 and 16 far more than my 50's now.
I caught this 212# BFT last May on my VISX 16 and 80# gear.

My biggest BFT was 225# on a Mak 50 as was my 270# YFT in PV on Alan's Mak 50.
My largest BFT, 338#, and YFT, 258#, were caught on Avet 50 SDS reels.

;D ;D Won't work to pull an iron fast enough.
What is the retrieve rate of this reel?

For my intended use the retrieve rate is not a concern but I will check the next time I am at my shop.

I don't jig with a 50!
I have, for about 5 minutes. My plus size tuna jigging reel is a 16 size.
11", it will be a bit more when I finish filling the spool It is about 3/16" from full.

I am sure about that, probably around 10" per handle turn.
I did not see your previous comment.... 31" for one revolution of the spool?
Fat finger, bad eyes, shitty cel phone and I did not check before posting. I edited my post to correct it.. Your estimate cold close, the reel gets 11" per revolution in low. When I finish filling it it might get 12".
