Curious about this. Are the side plates the same size and bolt pattern? I know the spool shaft is probably a bit different, cause, well, ball bearings, but was wondering if they have aluminum spool bodies, or chrome/bronze. Mostly wondering about the side plates. Is the 210 basically just a 209 with ball bearings?
The 210 is high speed and ball bearings
It's similar in size but quite a bit different in other ways. Haven't tried swapping parts some might be the same
Both reels are same size, and have many common parts. The main difference is the 210 has fiberglass reinforced sideplates, spool riding on ball bearings, higher speed gear set with bigger drag washers. The 209 has a small 155 main gear and drags. The 210 has jigmaster gears with larger drag washers
posts, seat, star, handle should swap. The 210 is a great reel for bottom fishing, trolling and down rigging but is a head scratcher as being called the Mag 210, with no mag (the Mag 10 is magged). Ted summed it nicely.
Thanks for the great and useful replies. Nice idea, fiberglass reinforced side plates. Funny, but I saw a youtube vid of a guy doing a teardown of a 210 and he said it had mag brakes, but I never saw any magnets! Seems like an urban legend, related to the ACTUAL magnets in the Mag 10, maybe. Anyway I just pulled the trigger on a 210 on fleabay to experiment with. Should be interesting.
That was kind of a dumb thing that Penn did. The 10 and the 210, both called Mag ____? Reels. The 210 seems like it weighs more than the 209, probably not much though. The 4:1 gears are a big improvement.
A CT bar in a Mag 10 would actually yield a little powerhouse and nice casting reel for surf fishing...some members have done this custom work, I believe Chad made a frame and Mike (MHC) did a full plate cut-down.
I had a 10 and 210 I used for Chinook fishing when I lived in SE Alaska and found the 10 to be more than enough reel.

I don't even see any 210 reels with aluminum spools. Is there an aluminum spool for the 210? How do guys mag this reel? Add on an aluminum spool end plate? Put the 210 spindle into an aluminum spool like from a 209, maybe? Or is this just not done?
Is the spool chromed bronze?
I've been kicking around opening this can of worms, here we go. You can mag a reel with an aluminum spool because aluminum is conductive but not magnetic. So when it spins in a magnetic field, a current is generated and also a force opposite the direction of rotation.
But brass/bronze is also conductive but not magnetic, right? Shouldn't it still work?
I have other Penn reels with chromed bronze spools, and spare sideplates I don't care about. But I have to be up for work in 5 hours. Plus tomorrow (and by that I mean today, it's after midnight) is Halloween and I have small kids. I won't get to answer my own question til at least Friday. Dang it.

It does.

Mucho Danke. Trigger pulled.
