Title: How to disassemble old avet handle?
Post by: Nedshammer on November 17, 2024, 12:26:01 PM
Many apologies if there is an existing post- I tried searching but came up empty.  Maybe my query sucks (or I do)...

I have this older Avet MXL- the handle doesn't spin as freely as I'd like, so was hoping to disassemble / lubricate /etc. I can't figure out how to break it down beyond getting the 'hand grip' off, which I did by removing the flathead screw inside.

Any and all help is greatly recommended- after cleaning the reel, lubricating, replacing bearings, and reassembly, I like this reel- just need a good handle.

Best,
Andrew

They were a poor design and the best thing you can do is drill the shaft out of the handle arm and replace the handle, Alan sells a really nice handle. Second best is buy a new handle and arm from Avet but then you have bearings in the knob that can fail, but at least you can disassemble them.

If you don't care about color I  think I might have a new style blue single speed handle and arm.

Keta- thanks for the info!  I'll look into replacing the handle.  Glad to know I'm not a complete dunce for being unable to figure it out.  Cheers

i define a full handle assembly as being a grip that you hold on to, an arm that attaches to the reel, and a spindle in the middle.  if you take a look at your spindle, there should be a small hole.  that is actually an oil port, so you can try to squeeze some oil into the hole.  also, at the grip end of the spindle, that threaded piece pops out.  that will give you access to the threaded post that holds the spindle on.

and for a larger grip, i have a replacement grip that just screws on.  you would keep the original arm and spindle.  take another look and fiddle with it.  please let us know how it goes.

Thanks Alan - I'll give that a try.  If that doesn't work for some reason, is there a recommended / compatible replacement for the whole (three part as you defined it) assembly?  I'm going to see if the handle from a more modern Avet is compatible (though I'm guessing folks already know that answer)

Alternatively, is there a way to ditch the existing spindle and handle, keeping the original arm?  I hope that makes sense.  Thanks in advance!

Drill out the spindle and put one of Alan's handles on your arm.

actually, i have a grip that just screws on to the original spindle.  no drilling required.

It sounds like it is locked up Alan.  I have 2 of the Avet type handles in my reels and they were easy to install.

this threaded piece is at the end of the spindle.  it pops out.

Thanks for the advice guys - after putting some oil into the port and working it in a couple times I've gotten the handle into a pretty good place.  It was never seized, just more resistant than I wanted.  I'll keep the replacement idea in my back pocket if I can't keep it functioning properly.

Many thanks!

I would still get one if Alan's  early Avet handles.  They are comfortable and easy to install .
