Hi all. My first reel post ;D . I recently started cleaning my dad's old squidder. It was packed away after he passed and I've decided to try to put it back into action ( I'd like to get into conventional surfcasting during my retirement). The reel seemed pretty much functional before I started taking it apart except for feeling a little gritty internally while winding. I didn't fish with it. I was just checking function (anti-reverse, freespooling, clicker).
Internally it didn't look too bad. A little gritty grease and varnishing. When I got to opening up the mechanism, I was very careful to hold the backside when removing the side plate screws to avoid letting the anti-reverse dog and spring pop out. I was curious to find the dog in place but found no spiral spring anywhere as I was expecting. Instead I found the dog and a strip of copper colored metal which was lying in the grease behind it. It didn't seem to attach to anything and really looked like it broke off something, but what I couldn't tell. I've attached a couple of pictures and maybe someone can give me some insight.
The dog itself has no markings and again, I did not find the spiral spring that I was expecting that on these reels works in conjunction with the dog. Thanks upfront.

The flat piece is the AR dog spring, part # 14C-140. It is damaged but useable but it should be replaced. Mystic has the spring listed as a 14C-140-SUB.
Like Lee says. Not all old Penns used that coil spring setup that you are familiar with/expecting, many incorporated a leaf spring - which is what you have there and as Lee says it looks a little mangled. When new, they usually come as a flat strip that you will bend to fit. Good luck on restoring that old Squidder; I would toss some fresh drag washers in there "just because". If you need a picture/schematic of how that spring orientates with the dog; say the word. - john
Penn 9 has same type spring that fits into the side plate.It's been awhile,but I think it's tricky to get it stay put.Maybe some grease helps...
Hey all, thanks so much! The only diagram I could find when I started looking onine was for the 140L version which showed the coil spring. My mystery solved. :d

John, yes I could use a schematic of how the spring orientates. It was not obvious when I opened the mech. up. Thanks -Thor
Now that I know what that leaf spring is, I just did a search and found a picture in one of the tutorial sections, of it's placement in an old squidder.
